Automation Engineer

Primary Duties & Responsibilities

  • Automation Design, Build, and Integration
    • Develop, document, and implement systems to automate existing manufacturing processes.
    • Create automation systems with emphasis on reliability, efficiency, ease of use, and maintainability.
    • Apply engineering principles to address power, safety, and signal needs.
    • Design and fabricate hardware and electrical components as needed.
    • Design hardware that is reliable, dependable, and easy to use, repair, and maintain.
    • Develop, support, and advance automation software for production use.
    • Support planning and execution of projects as a part of a multi-disciplinary team reliably against a project schedule.
    • Perform, lead, or supervise troubleshooting, root-cause identification, and corrective action activities as needed.
  • Documentation
    • Organize and maintain appropriate level of documentation, including schematics, diagrams, commented code, project plans, proposals, and instructions or manuals.

Education & Experience

  • 2 years of experience in automation system design for manufacturing processes
  • Experience in electrical component selection, PLC design, and programming
  • 0-5 years of experience in high technology processes, electronic products, or production of automation software and system development
  • 4 year degree in Engineering, Computer Science/Engineering, or Physics

Skills

  • Experience or familiarity in the following:
    • Software development in programming languages such as Python, C#, Labview, and PLC/ladder
    • Electronic design at the component, board, and system level
    • CAD tools for hardware design
    • Instrumentation and automated test equipment
    • Local and distributed network topologies relative to manufacturing or production environments
  • Ability to work with customers/vendors to resolve functional, quality and performance issues.
  • Ability to handle multiple priorities and issues in a fast paced, dynamic environment
  • Ability to work with employees in a multi-cultural, global team environment
  • Set a high standard of ethics, professionalism, leadership and competency
  • Due to ITAR compliance, this position requires candidates to be a U.S. Citizen, Permanent Resident Alien, or Protected Individual per 8 U.S.C. 1324b(a)(3)

Working Conditions

  • Office environment within manufacturing facility. 
  • Some work on manufacturing floor with potential exposure to dust, fumes, heat, noise and cold.

Physical Requirements

  • Prolonged periods of sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
  • Must be able to lift up to 20 lbs.

Safety Requirements

All employees are required to follow the site EHS procedures and Coherent Corporate EHS standards.
