JOB DESCRIPTION
Custodian
QUALIFICATIONS
High School Diploma or equivalent
REPORTS TO
Principal
JOB GOAL
To provide students with a safe, attractive, comfortable, clean, and efficient place in which to learn, play, and develop
PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES
Keeps building and premises, including sidewalks, driveways, and play areas neat and clean at all times
Regulates heat and air conditioning systems to provide temperatures appropriate to the season and to ensure economical usage of fuel, water, and electricity
Shovels, plows, and sands walkways, driveways, parking areas, and steps, as appropriate
Checks daily to ensure that all exit doors are open and all panic bolts are working properly during the hours of building occupancy
Sweeps classrooms daily and dusts furniture
Cleans corridors after school each day, and during the day when required
Scrubs and disinfects toilet floors daily, and cleans all fixtures and fountains daily
Washes all windows, inside and outside, at least twice a year, and more if necessary
Keeps the grounds free from rubbish
Performs such yard-keeping chores as grass cutting and tree trimming as necessary, to maintain the school grounds in a safe and attractive condition
Keeps all floors in a clean and attractive condition and in a good state of preservation
Cleans all chalkboards as required
Makes minor building repairs and reports major repairs promptly to the principal
Reports immediately to the principal any damage to school property
Assumes responsibility for the opening and closing of the building each school day and for determining, before leaving, that all doors and windows are secured, and all lights, except those left on for safety reasons, are turned off
Keeps an inventory of supplies, equipment, and fuel on hand, and requisitions such needed replacements from the principal far enough in advance so that they may be delivered in such time as will not hinder the custodian’s work
Conducts an ongoing program of general maintenance, upkeep, and repair
Moves furniture or equipment for various activities as directed by the principal
Complies with local laws and procedures for the storage and disposal of trash
Conducts periodic inspections of all electrical installations to ensure safe conditions
Performs such other tasks and assumes such other responsibilities as may from time to time be assigned by higher authority
TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT
Terms of employment shall be consistent with the law relating to employment by a school system in the State of Alabama. Twelve-month year, with a salary scale established by the Board for this position.
SALARY
Salary in accordance with the Board approved State Salary Schedule.
EVALUATION
The performance of this job will be evaluated in accordance with provisions of the Board’s Policy on Evaluation of Support Personnel.
