Department Statement:
Colgate University is seeking an Artistic and Technical Support Manager for Bernstein Hall, a brand new intentionally designed interdisciplinary building that houses experimental spaces that are integral to Colgates Arts, Creativity and Innovation initiative. It supports hands-on teaching and research in Art, Computer Science, Film and Media Studies, Music, and Theater and Dance, and offers faculty, students, and visiting artists, performers and scholars opportunities for collaboration, experimentation and exploration. Specialized facilities include a Digital Music Studio, two Fabrication Labs, a Gaming Lab, and a Media Archeology Lab. The 27 X 35 Experimental Exhibition and Performance Studio is equipped with theatrical lighting, surround sound and the capacity for video mapping, analog film projection and interactive, multi media installations and performances. Like other spaces in the building, it offers the opportunity to explore conceptual, aesthetic and technological boundaries. In addition to supporting these specialized areas, the Artistic and Technical Support Manager will also be instrumental in supporting workshops and installing student work throughout the building.
Accountabilities:
The Artistic and Technical Support Manager will oversee the day-to-day operations and management of Bernstein Hall's specialized spaces. This role requires a unique blend of artistic sensibility and technical expertise to support faculty, staff, students, and visiting artists and scholars. The manager will ensure the seamless functioning of equipment, provide technical support, and facilitate creative and experimental projects within the facility, including hallway exhibitions and "pin up" spaces that will showcase student work.
Facility Management: Oversee the maintenance and operation of the specialized equipment in the aforementioned spaces; ensure all spaces are safe, clean, and ready for use by faculty, staff, students and visiting artists; identify and coordinate with appropriate experts (both internal and external) as needed.
  • Maintaining and purchasing audio and video equipment
  • Managing student checkout of equipment
  • Hiring , training and managing student lab monitors for teaching studios/exhibition space (EEP, Media Archeology Lab, Fab Lab, Gaming Room)
  • Maintenance of teaching studios/exhibition space (equipment acquisition and maintenance, tracking and re-purchasing consumables as needed, software/computer lab needs?)
Artistic Support: Collaborate with faculty, staff, students, and visiting artists to understand their creative ambitions and provide appropriate creative and technical solutions; assist in the planning and execution of installations, exhibitions, performances, and experimental projects; and support students in their creative projects, offering guidance and technical advice.
  • Assisting in hanging and de-installing exhibitions in the EEP Studio as well as student work throughout the building
  • Arranging transport of artwork; insurance reports; facilities reports
Technical Oversight: Provide technical oversight of equipment setup, troubleshooting, and maintenance; train users on proper use of specialized equipment; stay updated with advancements in relevant technologies and recommend upgrades or new acquisitions.
  • Training faculty, staff and students on equipment/software
Collaboration and Coordination: Foster experimentation, exploration, and the realization of creative endeavors across a range of media and platforms; collaborate and coordinate with faculty, students, and staff internally, as well as visiting artists and performers; and serve as a liaison between different stakeholders to facilitate the smooth execution of projects and events.
  • Coordinating with IT staff for exhibitions, workshops and installations of student work
  • Meet with artists to discuss installation requirements
Organization and Workflow: Conduct extensive pre-planning with university support staff and external experts to establish a workflow and schedules; anticipate equipment, material, and staffing needs that ensure projects/events are successfully realized in the time frame allotted; and manage logistical aspects to support the artistic and educational aspirations envisioned.
Creative Problem Solving: Engage in collaborative, creative problem solving to meet or exceed creative and technological goals of projects; address and resolve challenges, both anticipated and unanticipated, to ensure successful project outcomes.
Supervision: Clearly define and communicate to student monitors the responsibilities and expectations related to goals and performance. Provide training and resources that will help student monitors perform their duties effectively. Regularly monitor and evaluate the performance of student monitors; provide feedback, recognize good performance, and address any issues or areas for improvement.
Safety: Accountable for adherence to Colgate University's laboratory safety policies, practices, and procedures that ensure a safe learning environment for students, staff and faculty. Stay current with relevant regulations (e.g. health, safety, care, and otherwise) and availing oneself of relevant training offered by Colgate's EH&S office.
Professional Experience/Qualifications
  • Minimum of 1-3 years of experience in a technical support role within an academic or artistic environment
  • Proficiency with a variety of technical equipment and/or willingness to learn (e.g. 3D printers, analog and digital audiovisual equipment, music production tools)
  • Strong problem-solving skills and ability to troubleshoot technical issues to support artistic vision
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with a diverse range of stakeholders
  • Passion for supporting artistic and educational endeavors through technical expertise
Preferred Qualifications
  • Professional theater/music/film and artistic production experience
  • Familiarity with current trends and innovations in delivery of digital sound and image projection, fabrication, and performance technologies
  • Willingness to be trained on additional equipment as needed
  • Experience in project management
Education
A minimum of an Bachelors degree is required, or an equivalent combination of education and experience
A Master of Fine Arts degree in a relevant field or equivalent work in the arts is considered a plus
