Placement in the pay range is based on multiple factors including, but not limited to, relevant years of experience and qualifications. In addition to base pay, there may be additional compensation available for CHCM/CSU roles, including but not limited to shift differential and other special pay practices, etc. The posted compensation for the position is a reasonable estimate that extends from the lowest to the highest pay at CHCM/CSU in good faith believes it might pay for this particular job, based on the circumstances at the time of posting.

STATEMENT OF PURPOSE

Under the direct or indirect supervision of the Administrative Director. Performs tests on biological specimens in one or a combination of areas in the Laboratory. Provides leadership when Administrative Director and supervisor are absent. Provides direct supervision for Laboratory Assistants.

QUALIFICATIONS
Valid California Clinical Laboratory Scientist license is required. At least two years of experience, as a Generalist, is required. Available to work Saturday/Sunday every other weekend. Available to work/train for Beckman Analyzers for Chemistry/Immunochemistry, Hematology and Urinalysis.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

Occasional sitting. Frequent walking, standing, bending and reaching. Occasional lifting of up to 25 pounds. Occasional pulling and pushing of up to 50 pounds. Corrected vision and hearing to a normal range. Finger dexterity. Must be able to identify and distinguish colors. Must be able to concentrate under pressure with frequent interruptions. Often exposure to stressful situations. Occasional public or patient contact.

WORKING CONDITIONS
Exposure to noise is common. Frequent exposure to bloodborne pathogens, chemicals, bio-hazardous specimens and general cleaning chemicals.

MAJOR TASKS, DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
(All duties listed below are essential to the job.)

* General Staff Accountabilities

  • Employee’s conduct conforms to the Mission, Vision, Values, and Code of Conduct of College Hospital.

  • Respects the rights, privacy and property of others.
  • Effectively protects all health information from unauthorized access per HIPAA regulations and all applicable local and state laws.
  • Maintains required certification/license in a timely fashion.
  • Exhibits good attendance and punctuality.
  • Provides appropriate notice prior to vacation/time off and notifies supervisor a minimum of 8 hours prior to shift when unable to come to work.
  • Observes allotted break and meal periods as prescribed by Hospital Policy and follows clock-in procedures.
  • Adheres to the Dress Code.
  • Demonstrates an understanding of their personal role in the case of fire/disaster and participates in Performance Improvement activities as needed.
  • Functions with an awareness of patient safety issues and applies basic principles of safety as identified within the facility.

* Job Specific Accountabilities

  • Performs quality control tests with each test along with instrument checks. Always ensures the accuracy of results reported. Reports results as soon as available. Takes appropriate corrective action and documents all out of control values.
  • Questions and verifies all panic values prior to reporting results. Reports all panic values within 1 hour to appropriate staff members following “Readback” policy.
  • Responsibly completes the majority of work procedures during the work shift without sacrificing quality of work. Completes work left from other shifts and strives to reduce any holdover test to be reported, as results are available.
  • Accommodates STAT orders as requested. Consistently reports STAT results within one hour, or as soon as available.
  • Demonstrates a complete understanding of Laboratory policies and procedures as outlined in the department policy and procedures manuals.
  • Keeps track of needed department supplies in a timely manner.
  • Oversees the requirements for all instruments. Calls appropriate vendors for “as needed” repairs.
  • Consults with other Clinical Lab Scientists, Administrative Director or the Pathologist when questionable results are obtained.
  • Uses gloves and hand washing in accordance with OSHA regulations with constant awareness of sanitary precautions.
  • Performs duties in an independent manner with little or no direct supervision required. Provides direct supervision for Laboratory Assistants.
  • Assists Administrative Director with CAP and JCAHO required departmental preparations and testing..
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

* Customer Service

  • Exhibits behavior that is courteous, compassionate, polite, friendly, and respectful towards patients, visitors, physicians, and co-workers and extends self to make patients, visitors, clinical staff, and peers feel welcome and respected.
