Summary:

The Director of Campus Safety and Emergency Management is tasked with ensuring a safe and inclusive environment for all members of The College of Wooster community. Central to this role is the cultivation of positive relationships across campus and with local law enforcement agencies. The Director oversees the Campus Safety Department, guiding its operations, and ensuring compliance with relevant laws and regulations. Additionally, the Director leads the effort for emergency management, providing strategic direction and coordination during crises. Responsible for training faculty, staff and students in emergency response procedures and maintaining the college’s emergency response plan.

Essential Departmental Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Provides visionary leadership for the Campus Safety Department and Emergency Management, prioritizing professionalism, and positivity in all interactions.
  • Facilitates effective communication with various stakeholders, including students, parents, faculty, staff, and external safety agencies.
  • Develops and advocates for policies, procedures, and programs aimed at enhancing campus safety, security and emergency response.
  • Recruits, trains, supervises, and evaluates staff members within the Campus Safety and Access Departments, offering guidance and professional development opportunities.
  • Manages the department’s budget and financial processes to ensure effective resource allocation.
  • Maintains accurate reporting for the department, including Clery Reporting, and updates this information on the college website and publications.
  • Participating as needed in college-wide committees.
  • Ensure safety protocols and emergency preparedness during college events.
  • Leads, develops, and enhances emergency protocols, preparedness planning efforts, collaborating with relevant stakeholders across campus.
  • Develop and conduct training programs and drills for staff on emergency procedures.
  • Provides high-level administrative support during emergencies, ensuring effective coordination of staff as first responders.
  • Foster relationships with law enforcement, emergency services, and other external agencies.
  • Serves in the Dean’s on-call Rotation.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Job Requirements:

Education and/or Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in a relevant field.
  • Previous experience in campus safety, law enforcement, emergency management, or related fields.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

Skills:

  • Proficient in addressing inquiries or complaints from students, parents, alumni, or members of the community.
  • Skilled in conveying information to executive management, public groups, and/or the board of trustees.
  • Capable of writing summary reports for daily operations as well as semester and annual summary reports.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Talent in remaining composed and providing effective support during high-stress situations.
  • Ability to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.

Knowledge:

  • Advanced proficiency in using standard office software such as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint) for creating reports, presentations, and data analysis.
  • Knowledge of federal, state, and local laws pertaining to campus safety and emergency management.

Abilities:

  • Must have a valid Ohio Driver’s License.
  • Observes safety and security procedures; determines appropriate action beyond guidelines; reports potentially unsafe conditions; uses equipment and materials properly.
  • Acknowledge and comply with all departmental SOP, safety, and college requirements.

Work Environment:

  • This role is in an office environment.
  • This is a primarily sedentary role but requires some travel between building and departments.
  • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • Flexible work schedule with some evening and weekend work.
  • While performing the duties of this job, the staff member may work in outside weather conditions.

Physical Demands:

  • Regularly required to stand, walk and sit; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects or controls; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear.
  • Occasionally required to climb, stoop or balance and kneel, crouch and crawl.
  • Regularly lifts and/or moves up to 10 pounds and occasionally lifts and/or moves up to 50 pounds.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, peripheral vision, depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.
