JOB DESCRIPTION

GENERAL SUMMARY 

The Medical Laboratory Manager is responsible for planning, directing, and supervising
laboratory operations. Also conducts and interprets complex microbiological tests

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTION/COMPETENCIES 

Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

  •  Conducts purchasing, budget tracking, and inventory management for the laboratory.
  •  Manages activities of assigned staff. Oversees or conducts training and new team member orientations. Manages workload and scheduling. Responds to grievances of patients as well as team member-related issues. Handles performance management issues and participates in hiring.
  • Maintains laboratory equipment and tracks all routine maintenance and quality controls performed. Oversees quality assurance procedures. Ensures adequate safety and compliance with standard operating procedures. Requests new equipment as needed and develops new laboratory procedures.
  • Measures and monitors key performance areas of the laboratory. Recommends ways to promote continuous quality improvement, customer service, and team member satisfaction. Disposes of hazardous chemical waste per regulatory guidelines.
  • Maintains strictest confidentiality.
  • Complies with all State, Federal, professional regulations as well as company and departmental rules, polices, and procedural manuals. and competent in the areas of embedding, microtomy, grossing, special stains, and immunohistochemistry.
  •  Adherence to CAP (College of American Pathologists), CLIA (Clinica Laboratory Improvement Amendments), State Regulations, HIPAA (Health Insurance Portability and Accountability), Safety and OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) Regulations
  •  Participates in educational activities.
  •  Act as team player: collaborate, communicate clearly, and cooperate team members with focus on mission and goals.
  •  Enhances communications by consistently displaying excellent customer service skills in behavior and attitude.
  • Performs other position related duties as assigned.

CERTIFICATIONS, LICENSURES OR REGISTRY REQUIREMENTS

  • License and certification as required by state.

KNOWLEDGE | SKILLS | ABILITIES

  • Knowledge of CLIA regulations regarding proficiency testing, quality assurance and quality control.
  • Knowledge of laboratory policies and procedures, equipment, and of microbiology, including medical mycology, mycobacteriology, enteric, sexually transmitted, and environmental bacteriology, parasitology, and virology.
  • Knowledge of planning, budgeting, quality control, customer service, and supervision.
  • Knowledge of medical terminology to communicate with laboratory staff. Knowledge of English grammar, spelling, and punctuation.
  • Knowledge of governmental regulations and compliance requirements.
  • Skill in using computer programs and applications/LIS/ Point of Care devices.
  • Skill in performing a full range of laboratory tests and operating a variety of laboratory instrumentation and equipment.
  • Skill in project planning, laboratory operations, and budgetary control.
  • Skill in using computer programs and applications including Microsoft Office
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Ability to listen, read, understand, and follow oral and written instruction.
  • Ability to communicate clearly and concisely.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with Team members, physicians, vendors, clients, and external agencies.
  • Ability to collaborate effectively with health care team.
  • Ability to recognize and resolve hazardous conditions. Ability to deal calmly in emergency situations.
  • Ability to build relationships with patients and display empathy and compassion to patients.
  • Ability to work independently and manage deadlines.
  • Complies with HIPAA regulations for patient confidentiality.
  • Ability to assume responsibility and exercise authority over assigned work functions.
  • Ability to foster teambuilding with all clinic staff.
  • Complies with all health and safety policies of the organization.
  • Skill in planning, organizing, delegating, and supervising.

EDUCATION REQUIREMENTS

  • Bachelor’s Degree, preferably in microbiology, medical terminology, or health sciences required.

EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS

  • Minimum of five years’ experience in progressively responsible positions in laboratory, 
  • including two years of supervisory experience.
