Columbia Independent School is Hiring a Middle/Upper School Latin Teacher - Full Time Near Columbia, MO

Reports to: Middle and Upper School Director

Job Summary

Columbia Independent School is currently seeking a Latin teacher for the 2023-2024 school year.
This
Latin, one section of Latin IV, one section of Latin Readings, and one section of AP Latin. We use the
Cambridge Latin Course and cover Units 1 and 2 in middle school; Unit 3 is used for Latin III; Unit 4
is used for Latin IV; de bello Gallico is covered in Latin Readings and Virgil’s Aeneid in AP Latin. The
teacher must have a deep understanding of the classical world as well as a love and enthusiasm for
the subject that can be transferred to middle and upper school students.

Columbia, Missouri

CIS is a charming, growing school of 400, Jr K-12, located in a mid-sized city halfway between the
major metropolitan areas of St. Louis and Kansas City. Columbia is home to the flagship University
of Missouri, and so offers all the amenities of a college town—and a populace that values

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Teach beginning and advanced levels of Latin
  • Update and create curriculum in conjunction with the departmental goals
  • Work with students on an individual basis (as needed) outside of regularly scheduled class
times
  • Provide regular feedback (written and verbal) to students and parents
  • Update course pages and electronic grade books regularly
  • Prepare progress reports and conduct conferences for students and parents
  • Collaborate with other departments on cross-curricular connections.
  • Attend faculty, divisional, and departmental meetings as scheduled
  • Support the mission of the school through teaching, advising, and participating as a

member of the faculty

Other Duties

  • Serve as an advisor for an academic club or social activity
  • Provide support for and chaperone middle or upper school functions (field trips, socials,
dances, etc.)
  • Attend professional development opportunities
  • Model life-long learning through personal and professional growth
  • Serve as an ambassador for the school at Open Houses and other admissions or public

relations activities

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Classical Studies (emphasis in Latin); Master’s degree preferred
  • Teaching experience is preferred
  • Demonstrated passion for working with students in the middle and upper school and an
understanding of the developmental needs of the age group
  • Commitment to the success of every student
