Job Summary
The Academic Advisor/Student Retention Specialist 1 reports to the Director of Advising. The successful advisor will be responsible for assisting with the implementation of a holistic advisement and student retention program; demonstrate and practice student centeredness; and foster close professional relationships with students. This position will work individually and collaboratively with other Departments and Programs to ensure accurate, appropriate, and timely services for freshmen and sophomores.
Responsibilities
Significant Duties & Responsibilities include: Advises prospective and current students about academic requirements and selection of courses.; Disseminates information on university policies and procedures to faculty, parents, students, etc.; Maintains students' records updated throughout their academic careers and makes changes to records as necessary.; Analyzes and processes requests for readmission from academic exclusion and provides retention services for students.; Assists in conducting orientation sessions for groups of incoming students.; Audits student records for curriculum, major and graduation requirements.; Evaluates and determines potential course substitution requests for transfer students.; Compares transcripts with entrance and graduation requirements, and advises students on appropriate actions.; Refers students to appropriate support services or departments.; Evaluates and maintains student records for degree requirements using academic evaluation system.; Monitors student registration activities and academic performance/progress.; Coordinates communications to students utilizing intentional advising plan to engage students regarding personal & professional goals, course scheduling, core and major requirements, academic resources etc.; Monitors and tracks the retention, progression, and graduation of all students within assigned population.; Performs other related duties as assigned.
Required Qualifications
Required Qualifications include: A bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university and related experience in an appropriate academic discipline, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.; Must possess excellent communication skills.; A demonstrated ability to take initiative toward project completion; and the ability to work individually and collaboratively with team members.
Preferred Qualifications
Preferred Qualifications include: A master's degree from an accredited college or university; previous advising experience; experience in social media application; tracking of special populations; documented contacts; making referrals; and maintaining appropriate advisee files.
Proposed Salary
The proposed annualized salary range for this position is $41,568 - $46,000 and includes full benefits.

Knowledge, Skills, & Abilities include: Excellent oral and written communication skills.; Campus advising resources, including, but not limited to Degree Works and Navigate.; Demonstrate and nurture cultural competence when working with students, faculty, and staff.; Ability to organize information, develop a plan of communication, and completion of tasks while working independently to contribute to the goals of the team.
