This is a highly responsible position in the Justice and Public Safety Cabinet. The employee is expected to perform all duties to the best of their ability, act in a responsible manner at all times, demonstrate leadership qualities, and treat all staff, youth, and persons with respect.
This is a demanding position that requires maturity, reliability, and self-discipline. Career growth and advancement are encouraged through training and mentoring opportunities.
Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To, The Following
  • Prepares and cooks food in a Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) facility. Coordinates/provides instructions to juveniles assigned to kitchen duties.
  • Prepares/cooks food according to nutritional guidelines.
  • Monitors safety and security of kitchen area during shift.
  • Ensures food is prepared and served properly; ensures kitchen and dining areas are cleaned according to sanitary standards.
  • Stocks food and makes required checks of food storage areas, temperature controls and knife inventory.
  • Operates equipment in kitchen and dining areas following all safety and cleanliness standards.
  • Prepares production records and commodity reports for supervisors and conducts safety count of silverware.
  • Attends trainings, staff meetings and job specific workshops as required by supervisor and DJJ policy.
  • This position is deemed essential and has been designated for mandatory operations by the Appointing Authority; therefore, the incumbent is not eligible for Adverse Weather Leave.
Minimum RequirementsEDUCATION: NONE
EXPERIENCE, TRAINING, OR SKILLS: Two years of cooking experience in an institutional or large scale commercial setting.
Substitute EDUCATION for EXPERIENCE: Vocational training in food services will substitute for the experience on a year-for-year basis.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS (AGE, LICENSURE, REGULATION, ETC.): NONE

This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
