Description
The Education and Labor Cabinet’s mission is to educate, prepare and train Kentucky's current and future workforces. Our goal is to create and make continuous improvements to an education and workforce system that prepares Kentuckians for the 21st century workforce, while helping businesses find the skilled workers they need to compete and create jobs in the Commonwealth.
This position is in the Office of Administrative Law Judges, working as a Paralegal Consultant in the Department of Workers' Claims at the Education and Labor Cabinet. The person in this position will be based in Jefferson County.
This position performs technical and complex, independent paralegal consultant functions such as but not limited to: Job duties include:
  • Perform routine duties and responsibilities in the management of the Office of Administrative Law Judges (ALJ).
  • Transcribe and type legal documents, opinions, correspondence, and various other documents.
  • Proofread correspondence, reports, and various documents for accuracy.
  • Maintain filing system.
  • Provide professional support by working with the ALJ on the preparation and organization of Workers’ Compensation injury claims, making ready for pre-hearing and hearing conferences.
  • Receive new claim assignments on the electronic Litigation Management System (LMS).
  • Upload orders and opinions to LMS.
  • Assist with calendaring items from the LMS work queue.
  • Update required statistical information.
  • Inventory, audit, and perform closure functions on LMS upon conclusion of each case.
  • Schedule pre-hearing and hearing conferences with all parties.
  • Schedule, coordinate, and make reservations for travel, training sessions, meetings, and conferences for ALJ.
  • Prepare and complete travel expense vouchers for ALJ upon return and submit to the Division of Fiscal Management.
  • Conduct legal research, when necessary, make copies of legal documents; combine/assemble as needed for reports and/or case files.
  • Maintain library of same.
  • Record phone conference calls/meetings on a designated database program.
  • Complete time and attendance records for the ALJ office and prepare for submission.
  • Assist callers and/or visitors with information relative to the ALJ office or Workers’ Compensation cases. Complete general and statistical reports as needed.
  • Special projects as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.
The preferred candidate for this position will demonstrate the ability to communicate clearly and concisely, and work cooperatively with a team.
The preferred candidate should have a working knowledge of Microsoft Office products and a history of working with databases and reports.
This position will have access to confidential and sensitive information.
The successful candidate will be required to ensure the safeguarding and security of all confidential and sensitive information and will be required to complete trainings, sign acknowledgements, follow all policies and adhere to all statutes and requirements pertaining to the safeguarding and security of confidential and sensitive information while employed and after employment ends.
