Description
The Office of Vocational Rehabilitation empowers individuals with disabilities to maximize employment, achieve economic self-sufficiency and independence, and to contribute back to society. We also help businesses and employers recruit, retain and accommodate employees with disabilities.
We are seeking a Voc Rehab Program Specialist I to while under supervision, gain skills to perform professional level vocational rehabilitation functions such as vocational technology assessments, or under supervision performs as a novice counselor providing basic vocational caseload duties.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Works directly with consumers to assess needs in a community-based environment or under a regionalized model; Observes consumers for needed technology and the proper use thereof; Observes consumers and writes AIBs for inappropriate behaviors and make recommendations for more appropriate solutions; Makes referrals for behavioral group and/or individual counseling and best meetings.
  • Conducts Commitment to Service orientation for new consumers. Participates in the Vocational Behavior Behavioral Enhancement program and in emergency procedures.
  • Gains skills to assess consumer's readiness for employment and works with consumers to teach recommended skills; Coordinates services with all COPVTC personnel, vendors, agency personnel and students regarding transportation and appointments to facilitate vocational rehabilitation services; Answers multi-line phone system and give appropriate information in friendly, clear and concise manner.
  • Develops individual plans including vocational training; technical aids and devices; Observes and recommend consumers for needed technology and observe for appropriate usage; Talks with consumers regarding their chosen career path and make suggestions for alternate programs; Performs supervisory duties In the absence of unit supervisor.
  • Learns to serve as a trainer to work with consumer(s); Recommends training hours and learns to provide training in skilled areas to persons with disabilities.
  • Serves as a novice counselor; Instructs students in actives of daily living such as cleaning rooms, laundry, making beds, etc., and conducts room inspection.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Minimum Requirements
EDUCATION: Bachelor's degree in rehabilitation, rehabilitation teaching, technology or therapy, guidance and/or counseling, orientation and mobility, social work, education, health services, business administration, human resource administration, workforce development, communications, sciences or a related field.

Working Conditions
Work is performed primarily in an office setting. Occasional travel will be required to coordinate services between customers and the agency.
Probationary Period
This job has an initial and promotional probationary period of 6 months, except as provided in KRS 18A.111.
