Job Duties

The Office of the Executive Secretary, Supreme Court of Virginia, is seeking a Director of Legal Research. This position presents a unique professional and managerial growth opportunity in a challenging and rewarding environment.
The Director of Legal Research is responsible for significant contributions to the judicial system. This is a supervisory role.
Essential Job Duties and Responsibilities:
· Provide staff support and direct assistance to the Office of the Executive Secretary and the judiciary;
· Provide legal research services on procedural and administrative matters;
· Supervise the development of thorough memoranda on legal issues;
· Draft proposed legislation for judicial policy-making bodies;
· Prepare impact analyses of legislation affecting the judicial system;
· Identify steps required by enacted legislation;
· Develop and revise uniform forms, operational manuals, and model court orders;
· Lead advisory committees and study groups as requested and assist with special projects as directed by the Executive Secretary;
· Provide staff members of the Office of the Executive Secretary with legal analyses related to their professional responsibilities and
· Conduct seminars and training on legal issues to various judicial branch groups as directed by the Executive Secretary.

Minimum Qualifications

· Graduation from an ABA-accredited law school and membership in good standing of the Virginia State Bar;
· Highly proficient in legal research and communication, including online legal research platforms such as Lexis and Westlaw;
· Superior analytical, presentation, and writing skills;
· Ability to handle a high-volume workload while meeting critical deadlines and quickly addressing emergent needs and issues;
· Demonstrated strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work well with judges, court staff, and members of the highest levels of state government;
· Demonstrated managerial experience;
· Demonstrated organizational skills and attentiveness to detail; and
· Strong knowledge of Virginia’s trial and appellate court procedures, systems, and rules
