Job Duties

The Western Tidewater Health Department is seeking an energetic team member that will be responsible for supporting the staff in the Environmental Health Department. This Environmental Health Associate is an entry level position that will gain knowledge of basic environmental health laws, regulations, policies and procedures. Tasks include performing routine investigations of animal bites, completing various permit/certificate packages for EHS review and signature, explaining permit certification requirements, performing on-site monitoring of completed wells, monitor sites and water samples, enter data in the Environmental Health Database, assist clients with submitting applications for Environmental Health permits and perform other routine environmental investigations. This position is required to work outdoors and indoors and perform moderately strenuous physical labor during all seasons.
THIS IS A WAGE POSITION, limited to working no more than 1,500 hours per agency during the 12-month period of May 1- April 30, regardless of the hire date. The wage employment period resets on May 1 of the following year. All wage employees are limited to working no more than 29 hours per week on average over the 12-month period. This position offers no state benefits.

Minimum Qualifications

• Skills in composition of reports, data entry and effective communication
• Proficient in basic computer software programs
• Ability to conduct inspections and investigations in all areas of environmental health, to work outdoors and perform moderately strenuous physical labor during all seasons
• Skills in problem solving essential
• Ability to work with diverse cultural backgrounds
• A valid State Driver's License is required to operate a state vehicle or if operating a personal vehicle while conducting business on behalf of the agency
