Position Description: Since its inception in 1996, the Virginia Commonwealth University College of Engineering has brought innovative, real-world engineering education to Central Virginia. The College of Engineering is seeking applications for the position of Laboratory Technician. The Lab Technician will be responsible for the day-to-day clerical and laboratory activities required to support the research goals of a large research lab for the Institute for Engineering and Medicine. Specifically, duties include:
Perform general clerical tasks for IEM research activities including scheduling of meetings, coordinating and collating all grant application documents and collaborations, and manage the calendar of the executive director and director of the Institute.
Ensure all personnel are compliant with safety requirements at all times, typically 10-15 people at any one time.
Manage all inventories and ordering, ensuring that material needs to conduct research are available.
Ensure all supplies and materials are received following orders, and that appropriate documents are submitted to procurement in a timely manner
Perform complex experiments and procedures under minimal supervision.
Execute prescribed protocols as outlined by supervisor in a timely and organized manner.
Consistently record experimental results in comprehensive laboratory notebooks.
Complete critical lab functions pertaining to maintaining material and chemical inventories, maintaining a safe laboratory environment, and routine laboratory maintenance.
Perform monitoring and preventive maintenance of lab equipment.
Clean, set-up and store equipment.
Stock laboratory solutions.
Perform routine laboratory tests and experimental procedures (such as Western blots, real-time PCR, ELISA).
Facilitate research in the laboratory by ensuring the supply of experimental cells for all projects.
Prepare and maintain cultured primary cells and cell lines under sterile conditions.
Compile results of experiments and regularly report to supervisor.
