Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth, strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.
The role of the Substance Use Treatment Provider is to offer evidence-based substance use prevention and/or counseling services to residents, in order to promote their well-being and rehabilitation as well as reduce the likelihood of recidivism.
Job duties include, but are not limited to:

  • Provide services during evening and weekend hours;
  • Document services provided in a timely manner;
  • Consult with Behavioral Services Unit peers and unit staff;
  • Provision of psychoeducational groups to residents to address aggression management treatment needs.

This is an hourly/wage position and is limited to 1500 hours to average 29 hours per week in a 12-month period. This position does not include the state benefit package.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Considerable knowledge in providing substance use treatment services.
  • Competencies in individual and group counseling.
  • Ability to function effectively as part of an interdisciplinary team which includes community partners.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills and an ability to function independently.

Additional Considerations

  • Experience and/or training in substance use counseling.
  • Training in human dynamics and counseling theory and techniques.
  • Experience providing treatment services to substance involved persons.
  • Working with adolescents and/or justice involved persons.
  • Certification by the Department of Health Professions as a substance abuse counselor (CSAC).
