Job SummaryAssists target area residents in organizing neighborhood groups, utilizing service referrals and follow-up as a vehicle to get residents involved in the solutions of community problems through organized efforts. Performs outreach activities necessary to involve target area residents in community organization efforts and other community-based activities.
Community organization efforts revolve around the areas of neighborhood organization, community development, energy conservation and awareness and service delivery.
Duties And ResponsibilitiesIdentifies viable organized groups in target areas, provide technical assistance to neighborhoods in organizing action-oriented groups to facilitate the addressing of community issues and problems.
Stimulates interest among target area groups and residents in cooperative efforts to develop permanent solutions to community needs and problems.
Provides technical assistance and direction to neighborhood and target area groups in establishing priorities and developing plans to achieve goals.
Encourages the development of neighborhood organized actions against the causes and conditions of poverty.
Encourages and facilitates the involvement of natural leaders from the area with organization efforts; encourages and facilitates the involvement of public officials who have responsibility to residents from the area with organized community efforts.
Assist area residents in obtaining available resources to achieve self-sufficiency.
Provides and coordinates training to area residents in developing skill techniques necessary for effective community organization and citizen participation.
Assists Area Director in CAA program accomplishments such as VITA, FEMA, emergency needs, special projects, and Captain data entry.
Prepares necessary reports.
Working ConditionsConduct work in a moderate to fast paced environment with various personality types. Possess stamina to remain on feet or be seated for up to two hours without discomfort or excessive fatigue. Possess positive communication skills working with staff and clients. Be able to stoop, kneel, crouch and reach. May lift and carry general office supplies and equipment, typically weighing less than 45 pounds. Local travel to meetings. Environmental demands include an air-conditioned building with fluorescent lighting, moderate exposure to weather conditions. Some employees may be occupationally exposed to potential infectious airborne/bloodborne pathogens and other materials based on tasks and procedures required.
Qualifications RequiredHigh School Diploma or GED.
At least 18 months of paid employment or additional coursework may be substituted for paid employment.
Good oral and written communications skills.
Must have a valid Oklahoma driver’s license and reliable transportation available.
Must be able to work irregular hours.
Must be computer literate.
Have no physical limitation that would preclude performance of duties.
Qualifications PreferredAssociate degree in Sociology, or related field.
Two years of full-time paid employment in a social service area.
SupervisionReports to: Area Director
Supervises: None assigned
Coordinates with: Other components, field staff, agencies, and neighborhood groups.
