Community Action Works is Hiring a Community Organizer Near Boston, MA

Protecting your community and taking on well-connected landfill operators or pipeline builders can be tough. But nobody has to go it alone. In more than 1,000 diverse communities of people from all walks of life throughout the Northeast, Community Action Works has been an ally to help people make a difference.

As a Community Action Works Organizer you will empower local community groups and citizens by providing training and resources as they take on environmental threats in their community

Representative Responsibilities

-Provide training for local communities on gaining media attention, persuading decision makers, crafting a winning strategy, and other means of making a difference.

-Recruit groups for our Emergency Relief Grant Program, which enables community groups from Durham, N.H., to Cape Cod to quickly and nimbly tackle new challenges as they arise.

-Immerse yourself in the community and work side-by-side with local residents, providing the spark and people power it takes to prevail against tough-to-beat interests.

-Raise money to support our work. Identify and cultivate donors, assist with grant-writing, and participate in other grassroots fundraising tactics including door-to-door canvassing, letter writing, and events.

-Run a citizen outreach office during the summer, where you’ll recruit and lead a team of canvassers to fundraise for important issues. You may be assigned to a different office location for the summer and should be flexible to move.

-This position requires exercising discretion and independent judgment in making decisions in matters of significance.

Qualifications

Entry-level candidates are encouraged to apply. We provide training on advocacy and organizing skills, as well as oversight and on-the-ground training by an experienced advocate. Ideal candidates will have leadership experience, top-notch writing and public speaking skills, an eagerness to learn, and be ready for a challenge. We value organizing experience, including building campus or community groups. Candidates must have a valid driver’s license and a car that they are willing and able to drive for work.

Locations: Boston, MA; Amherst, MA; Portland, ME; Concord or Manchester, NH

Compensation and Benefits

The target annual compensation for this position is $32,500 in the first year. Community Action Works offers a competitive benefits package. We also offer an excellent training program and opportunities for advancement.
