Job Summary

Job Title: Sous Chef

Location: The George Washington University, Washington, DC

Overview: Step into a dynamic and pivotal role as a Sous Chef at The George Washington University, where your passion for culinary excellence meets leadership in a vibrant and diverse campus environment. As the Sous Chef, you'll be at the heart of our Culinary Department's success, working closely with the Executive Chef to craft memorable dining experiences for students, faculty, and guests. You'll take the lead in supervising, preparing, and elevating diverse dishes while driving innovation in daily menu offerings and presentation. This is an incredible opportunity to leave your mark and inspire others through your culinary artistry on a prestigious university campus.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Collaborative Leadership: Partner with the Executive Chef in managing cost controls and overseeing expenditures, ensuring financial efficiency without compromising quality.
  • Menu Innovation: Assist in the planning and creation of diverse, seasonal, and innovative menus that captivate the university community and exceed expectations.
  • Event Execution: Lead the production and execution of catering events, delivering exceptional culinary experiences for university events, functions, and special occasions.
  • Program Development: Play a key role in the rollout of new culinary programs, working in tandem with the university's marketing and culinary teams to ensure successful implementation and guest satisfaction.
  • Team Supervision: Mentor and guide hourly associates, fostering a positive and productive kitchen environment that encourages creativity and excellence.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Educational Background: A.S. in Culinary Arts or equivalent experience.
  • Culinary Expertise: Progressive culinary and kitchen management experience, with a strong background in high-volume, complex foodservice operations.
  • Catering Experience: Experience in catering is highly desirable, showcasing your ability to manage and deliver large-scale events.
  • Institutional Cooking: Experience with institutional and batch cooking is a plus, demonstrating your versatility in various culinary settings.
  • Industry Knowledge: In-depth understanding of food and catering trends, with a strong focus on quality, production, sanitation, food cost controls, and presentation.
  • Technical Proficiency: Proficient in Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint), Outlook, and Internet navigation. ServSafe certification is highly desirable.
  • Client Satisfaction: Enthusiastic about participating in client satisfaction programs and activities, always striving to exceed expectations within the university setting.
