EducationHigh school or equivalent (GED) required; associate degree in science preferred.
Certification, Registration & LicensureNone.
ExperiencePhlebotomy Course and Internship
1 - 5 Years in a Hospital or Laboratory Setting that includes Processing Specimen.
Responsibilities
- Follows established procedures to obtain quality blood specimens from a wide variety of neonate, infant, child, adult and geriatric patients using correct site, equipment and techniques specific to patient location, patient condition and test requested.
- Responsible for narrating care as well as positive patient identification before obtaining laboratory specimens using protocols specific to each patient location.
- Accurately labels specimens at the point of collection (in the presence of the patient) to assure quality and accuracy.
- Accurately orders laboratory tests in the Electronic Health Record.
- Maintains integrity of collected samples at the proper temperature and does minimal processing of collected samples.
- Performs more specialized duties related to dispatch, order entry, phlebotomy, referrals, specimen setup, processing and testing functions, testing, quality measures and special studies.
- Performs CLIA waived and moderately complex patient testing as well as inoculates microbiology media for culture.

The employee is occasionally exposed to electrical hazards - shock, moving mechanical parts, slippery surfaces, toxic or caustic chemicals, and variable weather conditions.
