DESCRIPTION

The Senior Design Engineer directs, coordinates, and exercises functional authority for planning, organization, control, integration, and completion of engineering projects within area of assigned responsibility by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors. The incumbent also designs, drafts layouts and drawings of medical devices, assembles and systems from specifications, source control drawings sketches, models, prototypes or verbal instructions for both new and existing product design.

RESPONSIBILITIES / ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

• Provides production support to the machining area and the assembly area.

• Analyzes engineering sketches, specifications, and related data and drawings to determine design factors such as size, shape, and arrangement of parts.

• Sketches rough layouts and computes angles, weighs, surface areas, dimensions, radii, clearances, tolerances, leverages, and location of holes.

• Plans and formulates engineering program and organizes project according to project requirements.

• Assigns project personnel to specific phases or aspects of project such as technical studies, product design, preparation of specifications and technical plans, and product testing.

• Reviews product design for compliance with engineering principles, company standards, and customer contract requirements, and related specifications.

• Coordinates activities concerned with technical developments, scheduling, and resolving engineering design and test problems.

• Directs integration of technical activities and products.

• Evaluates and approves design changes, specifications, and drawing releases.

• Control expenditures within limitations of project budget.

• Prepares interim and completion project reports.

• Performs liaison function between Engineering staff and all internal departments, including Purchasing, Quality Assurance, Sales, Production, Accounting, Metal Finishing, and Assembly.

• Checks design work of other engineering department members including layout, form, fit, function, materials, specification callouts, geometrics, dimensions, and other out-put as directed.

• Measures machine and parts during production to ensure compliance with design specifications.

• Uses computer assisted designs/drafting equipment and software to develop designs.

• Handles Material Review Board responsibilities for Product Engineering.

• Performs other duties or special projects as required or as assigned.

• Complies with all Company policies and procedures.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

This position will be responsible for mentoring less experienced designers and drafters.

QUALIFICATIONS

• Education and/or Experience

o BS Mechanical Engineering or equivalent.

o Minimum of 7-10 years of design engineering experience.

o Excellent attention to detail and ability to multi-task.

o Must be able to work with customers to define and document requirements, address technical concerns and provide project status.

o Able to work with minimal supervision, both alone and in teams.

o Strong project management experience.

• Additional Eligibility and Experience

o Basic knowledge of Anatomy and Physiology.

o Background in medical device industry.

o Background in medical designs.

• Language Skills

Ability to read, write and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedures manuals. Ability to write routine correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers or employees of the organization.

• Mathematical Skills

Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry. Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations.

• Computer Skills

To perform this job successfully, an individual should have high proficiency in Microsoft Office suite. The individual must also be able to make technical presentations internally and to customers.

• Reasoning Ability

Troubleshooting skills a must. The ability to clearly identify a problem and to work through the steps for fixing it is imperative. Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form. Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

• Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to sit; reach with hands and arms and talk and hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk and use hands to finger, handle or feel. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision.

• Work Environment
