Conservation Legacy is Hiring a Stewards VISTA: First State National Historical Park Near Castle, DE
About StewardsStewards Individual Placements (Stewards) provides individuals with service and career opportunities to strengthen communities and preserve our natural resources. Participants work with federal agencies, tribal governments, and nonprofits building institutional capacity, developing community relationships, and supporting ecosystem health. This position is a 365 day (1 year) public service term lasting from July 15, 2024 - July 14, 2025.Living Allowance: $62.69/day ($22,881.85/year)About The Site And PositionFirst State National Historical Park recently opened a new Welcome Center in Historic New Castle, Delaware and is the process of creating a Trail Management Plan for the park’s most northern unit, the Brandywine Valley. This marks a very exciting time to get involved with the park as you will be able to help a newer National Park transition into a more mature and established park. The VISTA Steward will be involved with helping the park create a YCC program to begin to implement part of the Trail Management Plan throughout the next year. In addition, they will be able to assist with evaluating the park’s new Welcome Center, implementing a Junior Ranger program, expanding the park’s community outreach, and expanding the park’s volunteer program to a park wide initiative. The VISTA will be supervised by the park’s Visitor Service’s Division Lead and will have shadow opportunities with other divisions in the park, including with the Park Superintendent. During the duration of the position, the VISTA Steward will be able to participate in professional development opportunities such as trainings and job shadowing. The VISTA Steward will also be exposed to active projects happening in the park such as the African American Addendum to the Historic Resource Study, the Archeological Overview Assessment, and the Cultural Landscape Inventory. Other trainings and opportunities may be made available throughout the year for the VISTA steward as mutually agreed upon by the steward and their supervisor. Member DutiesThroughout this three-year program VISTA Members will:
Develop Volunteer Opportunities that teach fundamental skills such as operating equipment, computer software, leadership, etc.
Expand the park’s volunteer program across the 6 units
Create a foundation for YCC projects at First State
Determine what type of activities or topics local youth organizations are interested in learning about or attending
Establish service-learning projects
Expand the park’s social media presence
Participate in large park projects
