Assistant Principal

Conservatory Lab Charter School seeks an Assistant Principal who is passionate about collaborating with staff, students, and families to create a strong school and community culture rooted in the 5 school values of Cooperation, Empathy, Perseverance, Reflection, and Responsibility. The Assistant Principal leads the building leadership team, manages the upper school building and coordinates school events. The Assistant Principal is a community-oriented leader with strong interpersonal skills, who believes in building a positive school culture that facilitates the progress of academic, musical, and social emotional learning school-wide for students; inclusion of and open communication with families; a strong and collegial professional culture for faculty and staff. The Assistant Principal will build a community that uses data widely to inform decisions with both staff and students. The Assistant Principal must be confident in creating and operationalizing systems and traditions that build a community, culture, and traditions for students, families, faculty and staff, including daily operations and communication, grade level traditions including the 8th grade transition to high school, family outreach and engagement events, and external enrichment opportunities for students. The Assistant Principal will also support the organization, outreach, and execution of family engagement events including Family Action Network meetings, curriculum nights, and student led conferences. The Assistant Principal must have an understanding of the EL Education (formerly expeditionary learning) and El Sistema approaches to teaching and learning and school culture.

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Support principal in weaving Expeditionary Learning, El Sistema, and social-emotional learning into the daily culture of the school for students, staff, and families
  • Articulate school culture, vision, and mission to families, teachers and students
  • Provide coaching and feedback to teachers and support staff in building classroom strategies and routines that build a cohesive school culture across the grades, including leading small group and whole-school professional development
  • Supervise, coach and contribute to evaluation of school staff to support positive school environment focused on high achievement for all students
  • Lead middle school team to develop a robust and unique middle school program that strongly engages students in academic and musical learning
  • Lead elementary grades in building consistent school and classroom routines that promote EL practices and build positive school culture
  • Manage the transition to high school for Gr. 8 students, including working with students, teachers, and families throughout the application and decision making processes and liaising with relevant high school admissions offices
  • Coordinate with families to develop opportunities for family participation and support including family volunteer opportunities, room parents, teacher appreciation events and Family Action Network meetings
  • Lead grade level teams and teachers to provide engaging, rigorous instruction and timely feedback to students to create a focused community
  • Support teachers in building a strong understanding of grade level standards in order to build standards aligned, integrated units of study that incorporate service learning, field work and real world products
  • Work with Principal to develop a sequence of grade level traditions that encompass service learning, student reflection, and Crew experiences, including the 8th grade capstone projects and panels
  • Contributes to the building and nurturing of a positive school culture including the coordination of school-wide or grade level events, the implementation of staff and student recognition systems and supporting the school-wide PBIS initiative
  • Lead development of schoolwide CREW (advisory) structure supporting social development, scholarly behaviors and vertical alignment
  • Facilitate school culture team
  • Participates in the creation and monitoring of the site’s School Improvement Plan and is a member of the site Leadership Committee
  • Provide critical academic support by working with the school-based leadership team to manage logistical elements of major student assessments and school based platforms
  • Contributes to the building and nurturing of a positive school culture including the coordination of school-wide or grade level events, the implementation of staff and student recognition systems and leading the school-wide PBIS initiative
  • Lead development of teacher leadership professional development and structures (New teacher mentorship, teacher leadership roles and supports)
  • Lead weekly building leadership team
Operations
  • Collaborate with the leadership team to lead the development and logistics of school-wide events, Family Nights, and New Student Orientations
  • Support communications and external relations through parent letters, weekly staff notes, surveys, and visitors
  • Monitor student attendance and tardiness, communicate with families to create plans to improve attendance
  • Assists in the development, communication and enforcement of guidelines to maintain and follow up on proper attendance, discipline and conduct, as well as assuring that students and parents have supports in place to meet expectations
  • Works with the principal and others to maintain a safe, secure and clean environment at the site including supervising emergency drills, developing emergency response procedures, arranging substitute coverage, supervising students’ lunch/recess and school arrival and dismissal procedures
  • Prepares paperwork and reports as required (newsletters, handbooks, board reports, etc.) and assists with scheduling
  • Other responsibilities as assigned by principal and chief operating officer\

QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
  • 3-5 years teaching experience
  • 2 years administrative and supervision experience
Preferred:
  • MA certification
  • Fluent Spanish, Cape Verdean Creole, Haitian Creole
