Contra Costa County Animal Services Department

Position: Temporary Employee

Classification Title: Animal Services Operations Coordinator – Dog Foster Program

Salary: $32.84 - $39.92 Hourly

Minimum Qualifications Education: Possession of an Associate of Arts Degree or the successful completion of at least 60 semester or 90 quarter units from an accredited college or university.

Experience: Two (2) years full-time or its equivalent experience in animal sheltering, one (1) year of which must have included training, teaching or providing animal services education in a public animal control and services setting.

Substitution for Education: Additional qualifying experience or experience of any of the types listed below may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis up to maximum of two (2) years. Experience working in a public animal control and services setting

· Experience working with animals in a humane, zoological, shelter, conservancy, veterinary or other non-laboratory setting

· Experience training animals in a non-laboratory setting

· Training or teaching experience in a public or private organization

· Experience as a volunteer in a City or County Animal Services agency

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities Knowledge of:

· Pet breeds, typical dog and cat behavior

· Basic symptoms of common animal diseases

· Proper methods and techniques used to care for, safely handle and restrain animals so as to avoid injury to persons or animals involved

· Basic office equipment, programs, systems and applications (e.g., PCs, Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint, etc.)

· Proper English usage, spelling, grammar and punctuation

Ability to:

· Learn Contra Costa County Animal Services policies and procedures

· Read, comprehend, and interpret laws and regulations pertaining to animal adoptions

· Make presentations to the public, citizen groups, employees, volunteers, etc.

· Learn how to use computer software necessary to maintain and update departmental website

· Train and lead Department volunteers and shelter personnel

· Work independently with minimal supervision

· Provide information correctly and concisely, both orally and in writing

· Deal with the public in an effective and courteous manner

· Deal effectively with media groups in a positive and productive manner

· Maintain a high degree of professionalism in a challenging environment

· Schedule, organize and prioritize work

Typical Tasks

· Confers, counsels and educates members of the public on various pet breeds, dog and cat characteristics, and County animal services policies and procedures

· Communicates and resolves animal transfer and foster problems that arise in the course of the transaction

· Works with division staff to develop, coordinate and implement positive animal outcome procedures to enhance animal transfers, adoptions, and foster

· Designs, creates, coordinates, trains, leads and implements various animal intake, transfer, foster and outcome processes for staff and volunteers

· Oversees one of the department animal welfare programs

· Coordinates with the Center Operations management team to ensure an efficient animal flow beginning at intake, exploration of interventions to reduce length of stay (LOS) and ensure positive outcome paths for healthy and treatable animals

· Assists in the planning and writing of legal documents to present to the County Attorney for programs relating to intake, transfer, adoptions, foster and all other outcome paths

· Plans, organizes and coordinates Department special events that will reduce intakes and promote transfers, foster and adoptions

· Works with and leads, medical personnel, volunteers and interns who may be assigned to assist with typical tasks

· Performs related work as assigned or required
