JOB DESCRIPTION

Job Title: Tribal Justice Supervisor 

Department: Alaska Native Justice Center (ANJC)

Reports To: Managing Attorney

Supervises: Attorneys & Tribal Justice Facilitator

FLSA Status: Exempt

Pay Grade: E8

Job Type: Regular, Full-Time

General Functions:

The Tribal Justice Supervisor coordinates and manages all work, activities and obligations relating to ANJC’s Tribal Justice Support program including our Alaska Statewide Tribal Justice Meetings. Our team provides technical assistance and training to tribal justice systems, including law enforcement, judges, court staff, and tribal councils. ANJC also facilitates statewide Tribal Justice Meetings and Conferences that are designed to organize and coordinate public safety and tribal justice approaches. 

Duties and Responsibilities: 

  • Ensure timely and high-quality responses to requests for training and technical assistance. Includes: schedule and interview tribal court stake holders; gather and review tribal governance documents; write summary of proposed response; and provide TTA as requested.
  • Responsible for the quality and timely delivery of all project deliverables.
  • The Tribal Justice Supervisor will participate in internal compliance and development activities, as well as developing and maintaining external relationships. 
  • Manage and coordinate the work related to the Alaska Statewide Tribal Justice Meetings. Includes: serve as main point of contact for stakeholders; plan, coordinate and facilitate meetings and work sessions; coordinate implementation of the established action plan.
  • Track and manage program budget.
  • Ensure appropriate grant administration including planning, data collection and progress monitoring, reporting, and staff coordination. 
  • Oversee project team including selecting and managing consultants, contractors, and subawards.
  • Collaborate with staff to develop community outreach, training, and meeting plans for Tribes and Tribal Organizations.
  • Carry an appropriately sized caseload concomitant with other duties and responsibilities that may be assigned by the Managing Attorney or Chief Operating Officer.
  • Travel to both rural and urban areas may be required.
  • Perform all related duties as assigned.

  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, to include the following: ability to write reports, prepare training presentations, correspondence, and the ability to effectively present information to groups and community partners.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office suite, Adobe Acrobat Pro, legal case management software and relevant computer programs. 
  • Competent in using Zoom, Teams, and other virtual meeting platforms.
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships.
  • Builds relationships across differences; proactively and positively works through conflict and remains engaged.
  • Demonstrated adaptability, handles day-to-day work challenges confidently; willing and able to adjust to multiple demands and shifting priorities. 
  • Responsible for training and mentoring others; works effectively within a team; maintains team morale and performance.

Minimum Core Competencies: Values, Professionalism, Emotional Intelligence, Problem Solving/Critical Thinking, Communication Skills.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Juris Doctor degree.
  • Five years of experience in the practice of law, including experience and knowledge in Alaska Native legal issues, experience with tribal courts, tribal health care, or related programs or services.
  • Experience providing training, technical assistance, or community outreach.
  • Continued employment is contingent upon a receipt of a satisfactory state and federal background check.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Direct experience working in rural Alaska.
  • Direct experience with tribal court implementation or proceedings.
  • Demonstrated knowledge and understanding of the social, health, educational, training, and cultural needs of the Alaska Native and American Indian community.
  • Leadership experience.
  • Project Management Professional (PMP) or other project management certification.
  • Physical Requirements: 
  • Primarily works in an office setting, with extended periods of time at a desk and on a computer.
