COOS BAY PUBLIC SCHOOLSJob Title: Special Education Compliance SpecialistPosition Type: Non-Union Represented, 10-Month Position
Job DescriptionThe SPED Compliance Specialist is responsible for ensuring that all Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) within the district comply with special education laws and regulations. This role includes monitoring and auditing IEPs, providing training to staff, supporting the online speech pathologists, conducting systems performance review and improvement, and providing secretarial duties. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, organized, and capable of managing multiple tasks to support the district’s commitment to providing high-quality special education services.
Key Responsibilities
  • IEP Compliance:
  • Monitor and review IEPs to ensure compliance with federal, state, and local special education laws and regulations.
  • Assist in the development and implementation of compliant IEPs, ensuring they meet the individual needs of students.
  • Conduct regular audits of IEPs and related documentation.
  • Address and resolve compliance issues in a timely manner.
  • Training and Professional Development:
  • Develop and deliver training programs for special education staff on compliance-related topics.
  • Provide ongoing professional development to ensure staff are knowledgeable about current special education laws and best practices.
  • Offer support and guidance to teachers and staff in developing and implementing effective IEPs.
  • Support to Online Speech Pathologists:
  • Coordinate the activities and responsibilities of the speech pathologist department including filing paperwork.
  • Coordinate with speech pathologists to ensure the delivery of IEP compliant services to students.
  • Ensure that speech pathologists' practices are in compliance with IEP requirements and special education laws.
  • Facilitate communication and collaboration between speech pathologists and other special education staff.
  • Systems Performance Review & Improvement:
  • Conduct regular reviews of special education systems and processes to identify areas for improvement.
  • Develop and implement action plans to address identified areas of need and enhance overall system performance.
  • Use data and feedback to drive continuous improvement initiatives within the special education department.
  • Collaborate with district leadership to integrate best practices and innovative solutions into existing systems.
  • Secretarial Duties:
  • Perform general office duties including answering phones, managing schedules, and maintaining files.
  • Prepare and distribute correspondence, reports, and other documents as needed.
  • Assist in organizing meetings, training sessions, and other events.
  • Collaboration and Communication:
  • Work closely with special education teachers, school administrators, and other staff to support compliance and best practices.
  • Serve as a liaison between the district and external agencies regarding special education compliance matters.
  • Communicate effectively with parents and guardians regarding IEP processes and compliance issues.
  • Record Keeping and Reporting:
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date records of IEPs and compliance activities.
  • Prepare reports on compliance status and activities for district administration.
  • Ensure all documentation is in accordance with legal and district requirements.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent; some college coursework in education or a related field preferred.
  • Minimum of 5-7 years of experience in a special education setting, with a focus on IEP development and compliance.
  • Strong knowledge of federal and state special education laws and regulations.
  • Experience in training and professional development for educators is preferred.
  • Excellent organizational, communication, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficiency in using educational software and technology for record keeping and reporting.
