What You Will Do

  • While position responsibilities vary, every member of our community is expected to foster a culture of belonging and a psychologically healthy work environment by communicating across differences;

Primary responsibilities include but are not limited to :

Demonstrated proper handling and / or restraint techniques for different species as well as the sanitation procedures critical to the wellbeing of the animals housed within various animal facilities.

Provide daily animal observation and report any health concern, abnormality, behavior change and / or mortality according to Standard Operating Procedures designed to provide optimum animal care according to Federal and State regulations and guidelines.

Possess a complete understanding of Animal Care and Use Procedures for assigned facilities.

Supply food and water to animals on a daily basis, as well as maintaining clean animal cages.

Handle animals with unique housing requirements.

Work independently with barrier and containment systems (BSL2 and / or BSL3) that require accurate and thorough work to prevent contamination.

Serve as an Assistant / Backup Supervisor (See details below)

Participate in husbandry weekend coverage on a rotating basis.

Serve as an institutional resource to the Cornell community for complying with regulatory requirements.

Document animal health and regulatory activities in paper and electronic.

Interact with and train individuals of diverse education and skill levels.

Maintain annual training certifications and attend national continuing education such as AALAS.

Act as assistant supervisor in cases where the supervisor is not available or is unable to handle a particular task. These tasks should be managed between the supervisor and the back up for a seamless execution of day-to-day operations in each facility.

Communication between the parties is key to the success of this arrangement. Tasks will include assistance with facility oversight, eSirius system entries and management of the facility operations.

Experience in veterinary medicine working with multiple species, such as rodents, cats, dogs, cows, pigs, sheep, poultry, horses, birds, reptiles, amphibians, and fish.

Up to 2 years’ experience working in husbandry facilities.

Ability to be flexible, open, and receptive to new ideas and approaches; adapts to changing priorities, situations and demands;

adapts to changing schedule and tasks with short notice.

Service oriented, good communication skills, detail oriented, positive attitude and understanding of how behavior affects others, and proficiency with word processing, email, and spreadsheets.

Interest or experience in rodent breeding, health monitoring and colony management.

Interest or experience in teaching and training.

Ability to work weekends / holidays.

Ability and willingness to work with animals exposed to hazardous or zoonotic agents.

Ability to lift 50 lbs., Good fine motor skills.

Basic computer skills with Microsoft Office.

What We Prefer

Additionally, we would like to see evidence of :

Previous experience in laboratory animal medicine.

Experience or interest with eSirius, Softmouse, electronic medical record system, etc.

Veterinary technician certification and / or AALAS certification (preferred or eligible).

Familiarity with the Animal Welfare Act, Public Health Service policy, the Guide for Care and Use of Laboratory Animals, the Guide for the Care and Use of Agricultural Animals in Research and Teaching, and other applicable laws, regulations, and guidelines.
