County of Hawaii is Hiring a Cashier I (Kailua-Kona Only) - SR-10 Near Kona, HI

Duties Summary

This recruitment is to fill vacancies in the Kailua-Kona district only.

Your application will not be accepted if you do not indicate Kailua-Kona as a district in which you are available to work.
Receives over-the-counter payments for a variety of bills, assessments, and other charges; tallies cash and prepares daily cash receipts; assesses penalties and interest for delinquent accounts; and performs other related duties as required.
There are two (2) immediate permanent full-time vacancies with the Department of Finance - Vehicle Registration and Licensing Division in Kailua-Kona.
Cashier I positions in Kailua-Kona may be eligible to receive a $1,000 Recruitment Incentive. Conditions apply.
Certain Cashier I positions are career ladder positions. The permanent class of work is Vehicle Registration & Licensing Clerk, SR-13, $3,589/month. Persons hired into career ladder positions must meet minimum qualification requirements for the next level in the career ladder series, perform work at the higher level, and meet performance requirements to move to the next level in the career ladder series.
The eligible list may be used to fill other permanent and temporary vacancies in Kailua-Kona as they arise during the life of the list. Temporary appointment may lead to conversion to permanent appointment.

Examples of Duties

  • Receives over-the-counter and mail collections from the public in payment of a variety of bills, assessments, and other charges; issues receipts.
  • Makes change, sorts, and counts cash.
  • Verifies bills against remittances and issues receipts.
  • Computes and assesses penalties on delinquent accounts.
  • Balances cash against cash receipt stubs.
  • Prepares daily cash report; verifies cash remittances, reports, and other substantiating documents received from field collectors in the county.
  • Keeps records of collections and prepares bank deposit slips.
  • Segregates receipts into revenue accounts and credits these accounts in a daily report.

Minimum Qualification Requirements

Training and Experience:
A combination of education and experience substantially equivalent to:

  • graduation from high school, and
  • two (2) years of clerical experience, some of which shall have involved handling cash.

Examination: All applicants who meet the minimum qualification requirements will be assigned a score of 70 points. An education and experience evaluation will be conducted based on the applicant's training, education and experience as presented in the application.

Knowledge of: office practices and procedures; methods of accounting for and banking cash; various negotiable instruments used in everyday business transactions; office machines such as cash registers, adding and calculating machines.

Ability to: make arithmetical computations; operate office machines; handle cash rapidly and accurately; keep financial records; meet and deal effectively with the public; maintain effective working relationships with others; understand and follow oral and written instructions; compare names and numbers rapidly and accurately; learn applicable laws, rules, and procedures.
