Description
This position performs skilled, specialized work of varying difficulty within the areas of combatting, extinguishing and preventing fires; performing rescue and emergency medical services; performing life safety activities and/or performing special assigned duties in auxiliary services to support the department's many programs. The work schedule is 24 hours on and 48 hours off.
Essential Job Duties
ESSENTIAL JOB DUTIES:
  • Provides emergency medical treatment to the Basic and Advanced Life Support level of certification and training.
  • Performs firefighting activities including operating related fire equipment, laying hose, and performing fire combat, containment and extinguishment tasks.
  • Performing prolonged and arduous tasks, including heavy lifting weighing more than 75 pounds, while wearing heavy protective equipment under hazardous conditions.
  • Utilizes all required safety measures when performing assigned job duties.
  • Inspects assigned emergency vehicles daily; ensures that vehicle is clean, fully equipped and in proper operating condition and in compliance with all state and local laws.
  • Prepares reports as required.
  • Attends and participates in company drills and training sessions.
  • Performs routine station housekeeping and routine office work as required.
  • Performs the duties listed, as well as those assigned, with professionalism and a sense of urgency.
Typical Requirements
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS :
All applicants MUST AT TIME OF APPLICATION SUBMITTAL: (1) be a non-smoker of tobacco or tobacco products for at least 1 year to date the employment application is received and agree to remain tobacco-free (in any form) during their employment; (2) have no DWI or DUI on driver's license record for 3 years prior to appointment.
Education/Experience:
  • High school diploma / GED from a recognized issuing agency.
Licenses, Certifications, or Registrations:
All applicants must provide, at time of application submittal, copies of the following documentation:
  • Valid State of Florida driver license (must be at least 18 years old).
  • Current valid State of Florida Firefighter Certificate of Compliance.
  • Current valid State of Florida Emergency Medical Technician (EMT), OR Paramedic license.
    • (Applicants submitting a paramedic license MUST include a current ACLS certification.)
  • Emergency Vehicle operator Course (EVOC/CEVO) certification that reflects 16 hours of training.
  • Current CPR certification.
  • IS-100.c, IS-200.c, IS-700.b, and IS-800.d Certificates.

  • Signed and Notarized Tobacco Affidavit Download Tobacco Affidavit
  • Completed Firefighter/Paramedic Checklist Download Fire Medic Checklist
Knowledge, Abilities, and Skills:
Knowledge of emergency medical, rescue and fire equipment, operation and maintenance.
Knowledge of basic and advanced life support for emergency medical treatment.
Knowledge of fire prevention, suppression, and extinguishing techniques.
Knowledge of defensive driving techniques and methods and ability to execute such methods quickly and efficiently.
Knowledge of Indian River County's Street systems and geography.
Knowledge of departmental Emergency Medical Guidelines, Standard Operating Procedure (SOP), and Rules & Regulations.
Ability to react quickly and efficiently in emergency situations.
Ability to receive, follow and execute orders from a supervisor.
Ability to follow precise technical instructions in an emergency situation.
Ability to learn and operate relatively complex firefighting and rescue equipment.
Ability to perform prolonged and difficult work under adverse conditions.
Supplemental Information
ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS :
While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts and in outdoor weather conditions and is regularly exposed to conditions consistent with those related to firefighting and where emergency medical care may be rendered.
SUPPLEMENTAL INFORMATION:
Information herein is part of the current Collective Bargaining Agreement between the Indian River County Firefighters/Paramedics Association, Local 2201, IAFF and Indian River County Emergency Services District.
Holidays: 11 paid holidays per year
Kelly Days: Current 6-week Kelly Day cycle per the IAFF Collective Bargaining Agreement.
Protocol Medic Incentive:
Bargaining unit employees who are both paramedics and protocoled by the Medical Director shall receive a $6000 annual paramedic incentive, paid biweekly.
Incentive Pay: Incentive pay is available for those qualified in the following disciplines through a selective process and providing space is available: ARFF Operator, Dive-Rescue Technician, Hazardous Materials Technician, Technical Rescue Technician, MSA G1 Technician, Honor Guard.
Tuition Reimbursement:
Available for qualifying classes once 3 years of service attained provided course meets requirements set in Tuition Reimbursement Policy & Collective Bargaining Agreement.

Applicants are strongly advised not to call inquiring about test results or question why an invitation to test was not offered. Eligible applicants not hired or invited to test will be placed on an unranked eligibility register and be considered for future position openings. Indian River County reserves the right to accept new applications and extinguish or void an existing register at such time it deems necessary and without prior notice to existing applicants.

Candidates selected for hire:
  • Will be required to complete drug and medical pre-employment screening.
  • Who do not possess a valid Florida Paramedic license are required to attain the paramedic certification within 24 months of hire at their own expense and on their own time. Assistance may be given consideration regarding time away for attending the paramedic program. Successfully attaining and maintaining a Florida Paramedic license is a condition of employment.
