ABOUT LOS ANGELES COUNTY DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH SERVICES: The Los Angeles County Department of Health Services (DHS) is the second largest municipal health system in the nation. Through its integrated system of 25 health centers and four hospitals and expanded network of community partner clinics – DHS annually provides direct care for 600,000 unique patients, employs over 23,000 staff, and has an annual budget of over $6.2 billion.

MISSION:  To advance the health of our patients and our communities by providing extraordinary care.
 
DEFINITION: Plans and directs the work of a large pharmacy in a hospital or other health or mental health care setting.

Develops and monitors policies and procedures governing pharmacy operations within the general framework of hospital and departmentalprocedures and established professional standards; through subordinate supervisors monitors quality and quantity of work and takes corrective action as necessary.

Interviews and selects supervisory and professional pharmacy personnel; plans assigns, and evaluates the work of immediate subordinates and reviews the evaluations of their subordinates; investigates and prepares written responses to employee grievances; recommends and takes disciplinary action when indicated; interprets and applies overall facility administrative policies in directing pharmacy operations.

Develops and supervises the interpretation and enforcement of policies and procedures designed to promote the appropriate, safe and effective use of medications which includes the acquisition, storage, prescription distribution and appropriate use and monitoringof drugs; presents or provides recommendations on drug formulary additions or deletions to the facility's Pharmacy Therapeutics Committee.

Meets with medical and facility administrative staff to coordinate pharmacy policy and procedure with the work of other patient care staff; resolves issues in the provision of drug-related patient care services that cannot be resolved at lower levels.

Represents the pharmacy in contacts with hospital administrative staff and with representatives of other agencies and institutions within or outside County service.

Reviews and approves or recommends to administrative staff proposals for improvements in methods of ordering, compounding, dispensing, packaging, storing, distributing, or monitoring drugs and other pharmaceuticals.

Develops proposed solutions to problems of staffing, space, equipment and service levels and prepares budget requests.

Supervises the scheduling of staff to provide required pharmacy services and obtain administrative assistance to meet special or unforeseen staffing requirements.

Oversees the ordering of drugs, supplies, and equipment necessary to provide pharmacy services and delegates the interviewing of manufacturers' representatives regarding the purchase of drugs, equipment, and supplies.

Implements and ensures the monitoring of pharmacy-related contracts, including those with commercial pharmacies, laboratories, pharmaceutical manufacturers and foundations, and pharmacy benefit management services.

Ensures programmatic and technical guidance is rendered to contract pharmacy and prospective contract pharmacy providers.

Plans and implements information systems for recording and maintaining data on drug usage including costs and prepares or supervises the preparation of summary reports.

Designs, maintains, and coordinates with other patient care and administrative services programs for the control of narcotics and other controlled or restricted drugs and the enforcement of appropriate security measures.

Coordinates and reviews participation by subordinate staff in the training of professional or technical personnel from other disciplines in pharmaceutical principles, practices and operations.

Adheres to the allocated budget and makes amendments with justification as necessary.

SELECTION REQUIREMENTS:
Two years of experience at the level of Pharmacy Supervisor I* or higher.
DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Additional points will be awarded for experience in an inpatient hospital setting at the level of Pharmacy Supervisor I or higher, including responsibility for planning and implementing pharmacy procedures.
LICENSE:
A license** to practice as a Registered Pharmacist issued by the California State Board of Pharmacy.
All required licenses and certifications must be active and unrestricted or your application will not be accepted. 

PHYSICAL CLASS II - Light:Light physical effort which may include occasional light lifting to a 10 pound limit, and some bending, stooping or squatting. Considerable walking may be involved.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENT INFORMATION:

*Experience at the level of Pharmacy Supervisor I in the County of Los Angeles is defined as: Supervises professional and support personnel in the provision of pharmacy services in a hospital, clinic, correctional facility, or other health care setting.

EXAMINATION CONTENT:

This examination will consist of an evaluation of experience and desirable qualifications weighted at 100%.

CANDIDATES MUST ACHIEVE A PASSING SCORE OF 70% OR HIGHER ON THE EXAMINATION IN ORDER TO BE PLACED ON THE ELIGIBLE REGISTER.
 
ELIGIBILITY INFORMATION:
Applications will be processed on an "as-received" basis and those receiving a passing score will be promulgated to the eligible register accordingly.

The names of candidates receiving a passing score on the examination will be placed on the eligible register in the order of their score group for a period of twelve (12) months following the date of promulgation.

NO PERSON MAY COMPETE IN THIS EXAMINATION MORE THAN ONCE EVERY TWELVE (12) MONTHS.
