Under direction, to perform a variety of professional nursing services; to conduct clinics; to provide screening and sick call services for County Correctional facilities and Juvenile Hall; to coordinate preventive and other health care for elderly people; and to do related work as required.
SUPERVISION EXERCISED
May exercise technical and functional supervision over lower level staff.
Coordinates preventative health care and nursing services for the elderly population; provides nursing services at elderly health clinics; administers immunizations; provides counseling on health subjects and life style changes; gathers and prepares educational material for handouts; prepares annual reports on assigned activities; maintains cost comparison information for health programs; takes health histories and provides nursing services for VD clinics, chest clinics, and WIC clinics; coordinates nursing care for youth at Juvenile Hall; conducts physical assessments on new admittees to Juvenile Hall; maintains health information and records for young people in Juvenile Hall; counsels Juvenile Hall residents on health practices; performs tests and gathers health information for pre-employment physicals; picks-up sick call requests and medical intake sheets for County Correctional facilities; prepares facilities for sick call services; reviews sick call requests to determine if inmates should see a nurse or doctor; conducts sick call nursing examinations; insures that medical records are properly updated; completes monthly and quarterly immunization reports; confers with a physician to determine which inmates need medication orders and orders appropriate medication; reviews received medications for labeling and requirements for administration; responds to emergencies at correctional facilities; reviews medical records and information for inmates being released; notes physician's order for dental examinations, outside medical help, and laboratory work required; provides information to others; administers hepatitis injections to County employees and school personnel.OTHER JOB RELATED DUTIESPerforms related duties and responsibilities as assigned.

Education and Experience:Any combination equivalent to experience and training that would provide the required knowledge, skills, and abilities would be qualifying. A typical way to obtain the knowledge, skills, and abilities would be:Experience:Two (2) years of increasingly responsible experience in providing nursing services comparable to a Registered Nurse I with Madera County.Training:Associate of Arts degree in nursing.License or Certificate:
Possession of a valid license to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of California.Special Requirements:Essential duties require the following physical skills and work environment:
Ability to sit, stand, walk, kneel, crouch, stoop, squat, twist, and lift 25 lbs; exposure to cold, heat, noise, outdoors, chemicals, explosive materials, and infectious diseases. PLACEMENT ON THE ELIGIBLE LIST:
The Civil Service Commission may limit the number of qualified applicants eligible to participate in the examination process. If two or more candidates have the same total final score on an examination, they shall be ranked in order of their scores in that portion of the examination which has the greatest weight. The names of two or more eligibles having final ratings which are identical shall be grouped on the eligible list as tie names with equal rank for certification and appointment purposes.
Candidates who are successful in all phases of the examination process will be placed on an eligible list, in rank order based on a calculation of their total score from the examination process. The eligible list established by this recruitment will be active for a minimum of six (6) months or one (1) year, unless otherwise determined by the Director pursuant to section 6-4 (b) and may be extended for up to an additional year by the Commission.
PRE-EMPLOYMENT MEDICAL REQUIREMENTS:
As a condition of employment with the County of Madera, a candidate must submit to a Tuberculosis (TB) screening, and related follow up testing as necessary. Designated classifications* are also subject to a medical examination, which includes a review of medical history. TB screenings and medical exams are administered by the Madera County Public Health Department and/or health care professional designated by the County.
