County of Maui is Hiring a Geographic Information System Technician I (SR-15) Near Maui County (various), HI

Performs skilled technical work using Geographic Information System (GIS) software and applications under the supervision of higher-level staff; creates, enters, verifies and edits GIS data and other related datasets; digitizes, scans, processes, georeferences and orthorectifies maps, imagery, remote sensed data and other documents; creates maps, plans, exhibits and other GIS products; and performs other related duties as required.
Distinguishing Characteristics:
This Geographic Information System Technician series is distinguished by its responsibility for performing skilled technical work in maintaining and ensuring the accuracy of the County's geographic information, utilizing GIS software to create and maintain a wide variety of maps, plans, exhibits, drawings and other illustrative products. This class differs from the Geographic Information System Technician II in that the Geographic Information System Technician I performs basic GIS tasks under the direct supervision of higher-level staff, whereas the Geographic Information System Technician II uses GIS software and applications to independently perform the full range of highly-skilled and difficult technical work in support of the County's GIS program. (The following are examples of duties and are not necessarily descriptive of any one position in this class. The omission of specific duties statements does not preclude management from assigning such duties if such duties are a logical assignment for the position and are consistent with the class concept.)
 
· Prepares, inputs, edits and maintains the integrity of County GIS data; 
· creates, customizes and revises a variety of GIS products such as maps, plans, exhibits and other illustrative presentations using GIS software and applications; 
· assists in researching and interpreting information from a variety of sources, including field visits and site inspections where necessary; 
· maps, aerial or satellite imagery, in order to create and maintain GIS data;
· digitizes, scans, processes, georeferences and orthorectifies maps, imagery, remote sensed data and other documents; 
· sets up hardware and software such as computers, plotters and scanners; copies files onto various forms of digital media for distribution.
This is an amendment to the specification for the class, 
GEOGRAPHIC INFORMATION SYSTEM TECHNICIAN I, 
which was approved on September 1, 2003; re-established effective December 1, 2018.
APPROVED: March 25, 2019Training and Experience: A combination of training and experience substantially equivalent to graduation from high school and two (2) years of GIS, cartographic or drafting experience, at least one (1) of which shall have included using GIS software and other related software or applications.
License Requirement: Possession of a valid motor vehicle operator's license (Type 3).
Knowledge of: Characteristics, capabilities and requirements of GIS software and related equipment such as plotters and scanners; GIS concepts including the layering of information and the basic understanding of point, line and polygon features; GIS terminology, commands and codes; principles cartography and map production using GIS; general sources of information and procedures, practices and policies.
Ability to: Utilizes GIS software and applications to create, enter, verify and edit GIS data and other related datasets; create maps, plans, exhibits and other illustrative products; research and interpret information from a variety of sources and to explain these findings to others; follow oral and written instructions; deal tactfully and effectively with the general public and others.
