POSITION OBJECTIVE AND PURPOSE
In addition to performing the normal duties of a Redwood County Sheriff Office (RCSO) Deputy Patrol Officer, the Patrol Sergeant is responsible for supervising, directing, assigning, and reviewing activities of Patrol Officers and using independent judgment in exercising his/her authority and responsibilities. The Patrol Sergeant ensures RCSO Patrol Officers perform their duties safely and in compliance with city, state, and federal law, RCSO policy and procedure, and terms of the LELS contract. The Sergeant is responsible for coaching, mentoring, and guiding subordinate staff as well as reporting violations through the chain of command. The normal tour of duty for the Patrol Sergeant will be night shift but is subject to change subject to the needs of the RCSO.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- The Patrol Sergeant works with the Sheriff and Chief Deputy to identify and correct staff deficiencies as well as identify and promote staff strengths and opportunities for growth and advancement. Patrol Sergeants shall address subordinate conduct which is in violation of policy, procedure, or statutes as well as behavioral conduct which is detrimental to staff morale.
- Patrol Sergeants are a role model to subordinates and shall carry out his/her duties efficiently, effectively, and fairly while also displaying a positive attitude and a professional leadership style.
- Patrol Sergeants must carry out their duties in accordance with the RCSO Mission Statement, RCSO and Redwood County policies and procedures, and all rules, directives, or general orders.
- Supervises the activities and work product of all Patrol Officers and ensure their duties are carried out efficiently, effectively and safely. This includes ensuring citizen calls for service are properly handled, investigative follow-up is both effectively and efficiently accomplished, and proper police procedures are followed.
- Assign shift personnel and equipment as needed to ensure the public safety is maintained. Stay abreast of incidents handled by the RCSO; the Patrol Sergeant is responsible for reviewing Patrol Officer’s reports of incidents both prior to, and during, his/her tour of duty. The Patrol Sergeant may assist or assign investigation and/or patrol tasks to Patrol Officers.
- The Patrol Sergeant performs all the normal duties of a Patrol Officer including, but not limited to; responding to calls for service, completing required reports, investigating crimes and criminal activity, testifying in court, and all other duties normally carried out by RCSO Patrol Officers. In addition to carrying out Patrol Officer duties, the Patrol Sergeant will assist subordinates when necessary or requested, assume command and control of a scene as appropriate, and work open shifts when needed to provide proper police coverage and ensure the public safety.
- Provides direction and assists in the development of subordinates through counseling and guidance of RCSO Patrol Officers when lapses or deficiencies are noted. The Patrol Sergeant is responsible for evaluating Patrol Officer’s performance and providing regular feedback to his/her superiors of deficiencies, strengths, and recommended remedies. The Patrol Sergeant will report actions which violate state or federal law, Redwood County or RCSO Policy and Procedure, or LELS contract through the chain of command and provide suggestions for remedy.
- Accept and review citizen and officer complaints of Patrol Officer misconduct; investigate citizen and officer reports of Patrol Officer misconduct as well as observed incidents of Officer misconduct; recommend further investigation through the chain of command as necessary; provide disciplinary recommendations to the chain of command;
- Ensure proper utilization and maintenance of the Sheriff’s Office Patrol vehicles, equipment and facilities. Report damages to said vehicles, equipment or facilities through the Chief Deputy. Also make ensure the patrol vehicles are equipped with all the necessary equipment and will also be required to do a quarterly check on the equipment inventory of the patrol vehicles. The Patrol Sergeant will advise the Chief Deputy if any supplies would need to be ordered.
- Provide regular reports to superiors of Patrol Officer activities and developments which affect Redwood County and RCSO. The Patrol Sergeant is expected to respond on or off duty to RCSO calls for service or emergencies as directed.
- Access to Not Public Data – The incumbent may encounter not public data in the course of these duties. Any access to not public data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to fulfill the employment responsibility. While data are being accessed, incumbent should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason. Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished, incumbent must properly store the not public data according to the provisions of the Minnesota Government Data Practices Act (Minnesota Statutes, Chapter 13).

- If a new work assignment requires access to not public data, the incumbent is permitted to access not public data for the work assignment purposes only. Any access to not public data must be strictly limited to the data necessary to complete the work assignment and after the assignment is completed, the employee’s work assignment no longer requires access.
Qualifications
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS
EDUCATION
Must be current full-time employees who are Licensed Peace Officers with at least 3 years of experience and who possess at a minimum an Associate of Arts Degree from a Minnesota Peace Officers and Standards Board Certified School or has been licensed as a Peace Officer prior to the POST Educational Requirement are eligible to apply for this internal posting. It is recommended that applicants have at least three-year’s experience as a licensed peace officer to be eligible to apply for this internal posting.
EXPERIENCE AND SKILLS REQUIRED
- Maintain individual police skills and stay abreast of developments in the law enforcement field and changes in related laws, ordinances, and technology.
- Considerable knowledge of organization and operation of county government.
- Considerable knowledge of the Minnesota Century Code relating to criminal and civil justice.
- Ability to operate general office equipment and to make mathematical computations rapidly and accurately.
- Ability to supervise personnel in a manner conducive to efficient performance and to promote and maintain a high level of morale among Patrol Officers and staff.
- Ability to train and develop competent personnel for the department.
- Ability to communicate effectively, orally and in writing
- Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with others.
- Ability to speak in public and foster good public relations
