Covenant House Missouri is Hiring a Youth Career Specialist Near St Louis, MO

Purpose Of PositionCovenant House Missouri (CHMO) welcomes youth who are runaway, trafficked, at-risk, or experiencing homelessness with unconditional love, absolute respect and a place to call home. Beyond shelter and basic needs, we deliver transformative solutions to help young people ages 16 to 24 build productive, independent and sustainable lives.
The incumbent creates and delivers learning sessions to teach youth skills that are beneficial for their professional development. Help youth improve their work performance, boost morale, strengthen engagement, and increase retention. Explore new concepts with youth and provide ongoing opportunities. Help develop a skill set for the workforce on new technologies, onboarding procedures, and company policies and procedures. Ensure that youth are provided with effective and individualized services and service plans to help them meet their employment goals. This position is focused on achieving goals for the career center program in a manner which reflects the mission, philosophy and policies of Covenant House Missouri.
Summary Of Duties(Responsibilities to include but not limited to the following)
  • Perform intakes for youth into the career center, including an assessment of career skills and interests and reassessments as appropriate
  • Assists youth in identifying educational and employment opportunities that align with their interests and will help them achieve their goals
  • Work with youth to develop individualized youth-led service plans with actionable short and long-term career goals outlined
  • Provide ongoing support to youth in achieving educational and employment goals outlined in their service plan
  • Attend or facilitate on-site and off-site educational and employment opportunities including, but not limited to, enrollment events, recruitment fairs, and information sessions
  • Build relationships with educational and employment providers in the community to develop and explore educational and employment opportunities for CHMO youth.
  • Lead tours and site visits to large employers, educational institutions, apprenticeship programs, and internship sites
  • Assist youth with building resumes, prepping for job interviews, completing job searches, and filling out job applications in a timely manner
  • Ongoing coaching once youth has secured employment to encourage employment retention
  • Become familiar with the course catalogs of higher education providing youth with information on opportunities, program planning, and course selection
  • Assist youth with submitting applications for higher education programs, apply for financial aid, get the necessary class materials, and accessing their classes, including ensuring appropriate transportation arrangements are available
  • Participate in effective recruitment strategies to engage youth in career center services.
  • Provide online and in-person job readiness training to youth, utilizing Accenture and other appropriate career development curriculum
  • Transport and accompany youth to appointments outside of Covenant House Missouri
  • Oversee the timely and accurate documentation of all program activities in the appropriate database systems
  • Collaborate with the interdisciplinary team to identify the best approach to supporting youth in our programs with comprehensive services to set them up for successful and independent futures, including ensuring appropriate internal and external referrals are made for needed services
  • Create and maintain an environment in which the individual needs of youth are supported and addressed in a way that is comfortable, motivating and secure for them.
  • Ensure services are provided in alignment with the program philosophies of Covenant House, including Housing First, Harm Reduction, Trauma Informed Care, Strengths Based approach, and Positive Youth Development
  • Participate in all required trainings and staff meetings
  • Act in accordance with all organizational and legal protocol, policies, and procedures

SUPERVISORY DUTIESNone
WORKING RELATIONSHIPS Regular internal contact with all CHMO staff, outside contact with vendors and suppliers, and regular contact with outside agencies.
Education & Experience
  • High School diploma required
  • Bachelor's degree in Social Work or a related field preferred
  • Experience in program development strongly preferred
  • Experience working with adolescents or young adults strongly preferred

  • Knowledge in mental health, trauma, substance abuse, homelessness, etc.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Office, assessment tools, database systems, and Windows environment.

Salary: $18.72 - $21.84 per hour
