Great opportunity for a seasonal SENIOR BIOLOGICAL TECHNICIAN position with our Fish Ecology Lab. The location can be in Albany, Corvallis, or Sweethome, Oregon. Lead field technicians in conducting spawning ground surveys for spring Chinook salmon in two large river basins.
Backcountry travel (hiking) in wilderness areas with 1-2 nights per week of overnight camping
Experience identifying redds
Experience operating non-motorized watercraft in rivers (e.g., rafts, pontoon boats)
Manage, perform QA/QC, and summarize data using excel, GIS, R, or other software packages
Manage field logistics, including equipment purchasing and maintenance, gear organization and coordinating scheduling, lodging, and travel for field work
Safety conscious during all activitivities
Perform other duties as assigned
Critical Knowledge, Skills, And Abilities
Fisheries Science: Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team collecting, recording, and summarizing high-quality field data. Knowledge and experience in the identification of salmon and other stream fishes in Pacific Northwest streams.
Field Crew Leadership: Experience leading and training field crews in remote settings. Demonstrated organizational skills to build and track a field schedule to ensure work is completed in a timely and within budget manner.
Team Leadership Skills: Treats all team members with respect and professionalism. Desire to lead by example, by setting a high bar for personal performance. Demonstrated ability to collaborate with team members and mentor and guide other Technicians.
Science-Business balance: Expertise in and passion about science, natural resources, and resolving complex fishery problems. Understand demands of consulting, including working under deadlines.
Education / Minimum Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Fisheries, Forestry, Biology, or an equivalent science field and 2 years of related professional experience
Proficient with Excel and Word
Experience with GIS
Desired Qualifications
Experience conducting spawning ground surveys
Experience operating boats in rivers (e.g., rafts, kayaks)
Experience and interest in backpacking and data collection in wilderness areas
Wilderness first aid
