DescriptionInterim Director - Cranbrook Academy of Art Founded by Detroit philanthropists George and Ellen Booth in 1904, Cranbrook Educational Community is one of the world’s leading centers of education, science, and art. Comprised of a graduate Academy of Art, contemporary Art Museum, Center for Collections and Research, House and Gardens, Institute of Science, and more than 1,600 students attending our Pre-K through 12 independent college preparatory Schools, Cranbrook welcomes thousands of visitors and students to its campus each year. Critics have called Cranbrook “the most enchanted and enchanting setting in America” and in 1989 it was designated a National Historic Landmark. The Interim Director of the Cranbrook Academy of Art will oversee all day-to-day operations of the Academy. In this role, the Interim Director, who reports to the Community’s President, will collaborate with a wide variety of colleagues and stakeholders from within the Academy and across Cranbrook Educational Community.
Responsibilities Include, But Are Not Limited To
  • Provide steady operational oversight to ensure continued momentum in enrollment/fiscal, academic and operational spheres, empowering and supporting direct reports and colleagues, including the Deputy Director, Deans and administrative leaders as they provide robust support of current students, staff members, and Artists-in-Residence; and as they continue recruitment, enrollment and retention of a mission-appropriate student body; academic program oversight, including program reviews, development of the Critical Studies program and movement forward in areas highlighted in most recent accreditation reviews.
  • Provide a seasoned, executive presence, within a close-knit academic community, communicating with all stakeholders, including Artists-in-Residence, staff, alumni and governance leaders, in clear, timely and empathetic ways, and with a sophisticated understanding of the value of diversity, equity, inclusion and access; bringing knowledge of trends, standards, and current best practices in higher and graduate art education; and collaborating with a wide variety of stakeholders within the Academy and across Cranbrook Educational Community as a consistent, steady, and cooperative partner and leader.
  • With the President and fiduciaries, advance thoughtful strategic planning efforts, readying constituents to participate in and embrace future programmatic and/or structural changes that will ensure the Academy’s programmatic excellence, long-term financial sustainability and continued position as a vital asset of Cranbrook Educational Community.
RequirementsThe next leader of the Academy will have demonstrated a high level of achievement in developing or contributing to a forward-looking strategy for an organization, building the financial, operational, and ideological support for its implementation, and skillfully balancing and aligning the needs of multiple interests. In particular, they should have experience managing institutional transition, and will be energized by advancing the Academy’s reputation and engagement regionally, nationally, and internationally. The successful candidate will have the energy, optimism, and entrepreneurial drive to lead the Academy into the future. An outstanding record of teaching, creative activity, and/or leadership in a related field is desired, and candidates from a wide range of backgrounds encouraged.
