SUMMARY: The Director of Special Education supervises special education programs from pre-school through high schools. The Administrator is responsible for the administration of all federal, state, and local laws, policies and procedures as they apply to identified special education students and programs.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES:
The Special Education Administrator is responsible, with the school principals, for the supervision
of special education staff members assigned to school buildings. The Administrator is directly responsible for the supervision of special education staff not assigned to specific buildings.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE:
A Masters Degree in Special Education from an approved institution. Eligible for RI Certification as a Special Education Administrator. Evidence of successful experiences in a variety of educational fields, including a minimum of three years in the education of students with disabilities. Evidence of ability in the development and implementation of curriculum for students with disabilities. Knowledge of laws and regulations for students with disabilities. Must attend a teacher evaluation program and undergo a successful assessment to earn certification to evaluate educators (teachers) and pass a recalibration yearly. Ability to establish and maintain good relationships with parents and professional personnel. Knowledge and understanding of the standards and curriculum in the general education setting. Knowledge of resources available at the local and state level to support students with disabilities.

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is frequently required to sit and walk or stand. The employee is required to talk and hear. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 lbs. The position requires meeting deadlines with severe time constraints, interacting with the public and staff, irregular or extended work hours. The employee is responsible for safety, well-being, and work output of others.

While performing the duties of this job, the Special Education Administrator must be able to meet multiple demands from several people. He/she will be expected to use his/her automobile to travel to schools/meetings. Reimbursement for mileage will be made. The Special Education Administrator will be based at the Special Services Center.
POSITION IN TOTAL ORGANIZATION:
The Special Education Administrator is under the direct supervision of the Executive Director of Special Educational Programs and Services.
WORK/SALARY:
The work year, salary and benefits will be established by The Cranston School Committee.
