This role is responsible for leading and implementing climate-related initiatives, circular solutions, and product sustainability strategies. The position requires a deep understanding of sustainability practices, a passion for environmental stewardship, and the ability to drive positive change within our organization.

This is a hybrid position that currently works three days/week in our Northbrook, Illinois corporate office.

A day in the life as a Sustainability Manager…

  • Provide deep industry expertise and initiative implementation
  • Lead the design and implementation of priority initiatives, through active program development and project management responsibilities.
  • Climate-Related Initiatives:
      • Develop and implement a comprehensive climate action plan in alignment with organizational goals
      • Monitor and assess the company's carbon footprint, identifying areas for reduction and improvement
      • Stay informed about emerging climate-related regulations and industry best practices to ensure compliance and proactively address future requirements
  • Circular Solutions:
      • Champion the adoption of circular economy principles within the organization, fostering a culture of waste reduction and resource efficiency
      • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to design and implement circular solutions for products and processes
      • Establish partnerships with suppliers and stakeholders to promote the use of sustainable materials and circular practices throughout the supply chain
  • Product Sustainability:
      • Lead efforts to assess and improve the environmental impact of our products throughout their life cycle
      • Collaborate with product development teams to integrate sustainable design principles and materials into new product development
      • Implement and manage product sustainability certifications and standards, ensuring compliance and recognition for environmentally friendly products
      • Evaluate new sustainable material and packaging certifications, standards, and programs to inform decision making on integration into CBH product, packaging and sustainable materials strategy
  • Stakeholder Engagement:
      • Engage with internal and external stakeholders, including employees, customers, suppliers, and regulatory bodies, to communicate sustainability initiatives and foster a culture of responsibility
      • Build and maintain strong relationships with relevant sustainability organizations, industry groups, and NGOs to stay abreast of industry trends and collaborate on shared sustainability goals
      • External Partnerships: Support engagement in relevant external stakeholder groups
  • Reporting and Analytics:
    • Develop and manage sustainability reporting frameworks to track and communicate progress on key performance indicators
    • Support data collection requirements and analytics for evaluating and comparing initiatives, considering environmental and financial implications, life cycle assessment, and other relevant factors
    • Analyze data related to sustainability initiatives, identify trends, and provide insights to inform decision-making processes
    • Expertise and comfort with interpreting quantitative data required to drive decision-making

  • Strong understanding of sustainability standards, certifications, and reporting frameworks
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills to engage and influence stakeholders at all levels
  • Ability to lead and inspire cross-functional teams toward sustainable practices and goals
  • Knowledge of relevant environmental regulations and a commitment to staying informed about emerging trends in sustainability

We’d love to hear from you if you have… 

  • Bachelor's degree in environmental science, sustainability, business, or a related field
  • 5 years experience in designing and implementing sustainability initiatives, with a focus on climate-related projects, circular economy, and product sustainability
  • Retail knowledge background is strongly preferred (direct retail or consultative)
