Position Overview

Operate one or several types of power construction equipment, such as motor graders, bulldozers, scrapers, compressors, pumps, derricks, shovels, tractors, or front-end loaders to excavate, move, and grade earth, erect structures, or pour concrete or other hard surface pavement.

Also included is Welding and Torching and other production operational equipment. May repair and maintain equipment in addition to other duties.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

The duties and responsibilities include but are not limited to the following :

  • Learn and follow safety regulations
  • Take actions to avoid potential hazards or obstructions, such as utility lines, other equipment, other workers, or falling objects.

Have the ability to adapt quickly in a changing work environment

  • Adjust handwheels and depress pedals to control attachments, such as blades, buckets, scrapers, or swing booms
  • Start engines, move throttles, switches, or levers, or depress pedals to operate machines, such as bulldozers, trench excavators, road graders, or backhoes
  • Monitor operations to ensure that health and safety standards are met
  • Align machines, cutterheads, or depth gauge makers with reference stakes and guidelines or ground or position equipment, following hand signals of other workers
  • Load and move dirt, rocks, equipment, or other materials, using trucks, crawler tractors, power cranes, shovels, graders, or related equipment
  • Drive and maneuver equipment equipped with blades in successive passes over working areas to remove topsoil, vegetation, or rocks or to distribute and level earth or terrain
  • Coordinate machine actions with other activities, positioning or moving loads in response to hand or audio signals from crew members
  • Take actions to deal with the results of delays, bad weather, or emergencies at construction site
  • Inspect or review projects to monitor compliance with building and safety codes, or other regulations
  • Study job specifications to determine appropriate construction methods

Additional Responsibilities

  • Ensure compliance with company policies or procedures for product transit or delivery

  • Display a professional and courteous attitude to co-workers, supervisors, and the general public.
  • Possess a strong drive to fulfill commitments and tremendous enthusiasm.
  • Requires daytime, nighttime & some weekend hours. Travel will be required inside the company’s operational area.
  • Report to the assigned job site with appropriate personal protective equipment and ready to begin work at the designated start time.
  • Strict adherence to safety requirements and procedures as outlined in the Environmental, Health & Safety Manual.
  • Strict adherence to Dolomite policies and procedures as outlined in the Safety Handbook.
  • Willingness to work in a team environment and assist co-workers or supervisors with other duties as required.
  • Must possess and maintain a valid driver’s license

Qualifications

Knowledge and Skills

  • The employee will be required to maintain membership in good standing with the Operating Engineer’s Union.
  • Individuals must possess the following knowledge, skills and abilities or be able to explain and demonstrate that they can perform the essential functions of the job with or without reasonable accommodations, using some combination of skills and abilities.
  • A strong commitment to safety and adherence to applicable federal, state and local regulations is a must.
  • Getting Information observing, receiving, and otherwise obtaining information from all relevant sources

Interacting with clients, contractors and inspectors on a daily basis regarding quantities and specifications is a primary responsibility as well as internal communication between departments to complete projects on time

Ability to read and speak the English language sufficiently to comprehend and communicate to others the requirements of technical specifications, regulations, reports, and manuals.

Experience

  • 2-4 years experience within a heavy equipment environment.
  • Welding, torching, mechanically inclined, quarry and asphalt experience preferred.
  • Understanding of leadership skills and strong communication skills a plus

Physical Demands

Walking several miles per day, occasional climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and traveling over irregular terrain.

Some tasks involve : prolonged periods of standing and / or exposure to noise or weather, good motor coordination, finger dexterity, and color discrimination.

Must be able to lift 50 lbs. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus.

Capable of lifting heavy objects and equipment. All essential duties must be performed without posing a direct threat to their own, or others, health and safety, with or without the use of a reasonable accommodation.
