What It Takes To Be The Medical SpecialistYour primary goal is to oversee and implement all medical needs for the department and ensuring all processes are compliant with state regulations (specifically 6100 and 6400) as well as the Health Risk Screening Tool (HRST) assessments while balancing quality of service. As the Medical Specialist/RN, you can expect to:
  • Have oversight of all individuals’ medical appointments and possibly attend specialist appointments.
  • Train staff on the proper use and care of medical equipment.
  • Complete regular HRST assessments on individuals and ensure their physicals are current.
  • Create and implement an annual skill certification course for growth of staff’s medical knowledge/skills.
  • Communicate professionally with the Residential Management team, individual and their support team such as their family/guardian, supports coordinator, etc.
  • Have proficiency in using medical systems for documentation and medication administration.
  • Serve as a Medication Administration Trainer showing staff how to properly distribute medication.
  • Develop relationships with the individuals’ medical team, receive and implement verbal orders, and ensure the quality of care is meeting each individual’s goals as noted in their care plan.

RequirementsRequirements to be a Medical Specialist/RN include:
  • Current Pennsylvania Registered Nurse (RN) license is required as well as proof of successful completion of a degree from an accredited nursing program
  • Experience working directly with individuals with an intellectual/developmental disability is preferred
  • Minimum of 18 years of age
  • Valid Pennsylvania driver’s license, successfully complete a driving history record check, and have access to reliable transportation
  • Successfully complete a pre-employment physical and drug screen and criminal background check
  • Ideal candidates are compassionate, patient, creative, motivated, detail-oriented, can handle multiple priorities at once, and must have excellent computer and communication skills. This is a very fast paced position that requires strong organizational skills and a genuine desire to help others achieve their goals and provide support in their everyday life while having a strong ability to focus on solutions. Additional skills and requirements for this position:
  • Must demonstrate leadership, as well as possess compassion for and an understanding of the needs, struggles, and desires of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.
  • Must have the ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with other staff, individuals receiving services, families, other agencies, and the general public.
  • Must be able to work flexible hours and be available to troubleshoot during non-traditional times of day.
  • Must be solution focused, adaptable and innovative, being able to quickly adapt to changes and have a constant focus on improvement.
  • Must be a team player who works exceedingly well with others.
  • Must be dynamic, actively seeking out opportunities for continued learning with a focus on optimizations and creating new efficiencies.
