Summary:
A Concrete Finisher is responsible for smoothing and finishing surfaces of poured concrete, such as floors, sidewalks, roads, or curbs, using a variety of hand and power tools. They align forms for sidewalks, curbs, or gutters; patch voids; and use saws to cut expansion joints.
Key Responsibilities:
  • Surface Preparation: Prepare the construction site by leveling and grading the ground, erecting scaffolding, shoring, or braces, and ensuring all tools and materials are ready.
  • Form Setting: Set the forms that hold the concrete to the desired pitch and depth, and align them.
  • Concrete Pouring: Pour, spread, and level concrete using trowels, screeds, and other tools. Direct the casting of the concrete and supervise laborers who use shovels or special tools to spread it.
  • Smoothing and Finishing: Smooth and finish surfaces of poured concrete using various tools, including float, trowel, screed, and power tools. Apply hardening and sealing compounds to cure the surface.
  • Texturing and Coloring: Impart texture and skid-resistant qualities to concrete surfaces using brushes, rollers, or other tools. Color the concrete by applying colored surface hardener or by spreading colored stones on the surface.
  • Curing: Monitor the wind, heat, or cold to ensure proper curing of the concrete.
  • Repair and Maintenance: Patch and repair concrete structures, ensuring proper adhesion and durability.
  • Safety Compliance: Follow all safety protocols to ensure a safe working environment. Use personal protective equipment (PPE) and adhere to Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) guidelines.
Skills and Qualifications:
  • Experience: Proven experience as a Concrete Finisher or similar role in construction.
  • Knowledge: Understanding of construction methods, materials, and regulations. Familiarity with various tools and equipment used in concrete finishing.
  • Physical Stamina: Ability to lift heavy materials and equipment, stand for long periods, and perform physically demanding tasks.
  • Attention to Detail: Strong attention to detail to ensure high-quality finishes and accurate alignment.
  • Communication: Good communication skills to work effectively with team members and supervisors.
  • Problem-Solving: Ability to troubleshoot issues and make adjustments on the fly.
Education and Certification:
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent. Vocational training or apprenticeships in concrete finishing or related fields are advantageous.
  • Certification: Certification from the American Concrete Institute (ACI) or similar organizations is beneficial but not always required.
Working Conditions:
  • Environment: Work is primarily outdoors in various weather conditions. It involves exposure to loud noises, dust, and heavy machinery.
