Job Summary:

Product and Supplier Quality Engineer (Quality Engineer) Quality engineers are manufacturing, supply chain, and logistics specialists who play a central role in assessing product/supplier quality and ensuring that products are free of defects. Quality engineers communicate between senior management and suppliers to address and resolve quality issues, providing technical input and guidance on process enhancements and improvements. Daily activities include problem solving, leading cross functional improvement teams, and driving corrective actions to completion.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Compliance with the Quality Management System and Environmental, Health & Safety requirements including being responsible for quality of work, good documentation practices/recordkeeping, good manufacturing practices (GMP) and safety.
  • Review and Assess Manufacturing/Supplier Processes: The primary duty of the quality engineer is to review and assess product non-conformities from manufacturing plant floor or suppliers.
  • Identify Quality Issues: Review incoming products from vendors. In this aspect of the role, the quality engineer conducts tests and assessments on batches of products to identify recurring errors or quality issues. They may also send products back to suppliers if an entire batch is found to be defective.
  • Maintain Documentation and Reports: Quality engineer maintains detailed reports related to supplier quality. These reports tend to contain vital information including defect rates and areas within the manufacturing process that result in flaws. The quality engineer prepares an initial report as the company decides whether to use a particular vendor. The quality engineer frequently revises these reports to reflect changes in vendor processes.
  • Provide Technical Guidance and Assistance: Quality engineer also provides technical guidance and advice to suppliers and to decision-makers within the organization. This guidance can range from advice on process enhancement to suggestions to overhaul production and manufacturing elements to reduce defect rates. The quality engineer works closely with the production floor and vendor to incorporate these recommendations.
  • Communicate Between Suppliers and Senior Management: Quality engineer serves as liaison between organizations’ senior management, customers, and vendors. In this aspect of the role, the quality engineer may meet with all parties to identify issues in supply quality and work toward a solution. Additionally, the quality engineer may gather information from all parties to support the flow of information.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering
  • 3-5 years’ experience in manufacturing environment
  • Statistical analysis –strong statistical analysis skills; able to rigorously assess and analyze supplier or vendor data along with internal metrics.
  • Technical skills and knowledge – thorough knowledge of technical elements of manufacturing and engineering, and the ability to identify flaws in processes or products.
  • Quality assurance skills – experience with quality assurance is also a necessity to be able to inspect products and manufacturing environments to identify potential issues.
  • Manufacturing and engineering skills – knowledgeable about manufacturing processes and engineering principles to make informed judgments and recommendations.
  • Process enhancement – provide guidance on improving process efficiency while maintaining a high level of quality, safety, and reliability.
  • Communication skills – excellent written and verbal communication skills to serve as liaisons between companies and suppliers and prepare quality assurance reports.
