THIS ROLE: 

The Welder Fitter will work directly with the Shipyard Superintendent on leading the welding team in support of Curtin Maritime shipyard projects. Welder Fitter will be responsible for set-up, and laying out work using fixtures and guides to repair, modify, or fabricate parts and/or equipment products. The welder/fitter must utilize welding equipment to complete work per specifications and in accordance with the production schedule in the shipyard. To achieve this, the Welder Fitter must be able to operate and /or use related equipment and tools which include stick, wire feed, TIG, forklifts, hoists, slings, grinders (portable & Bench), cutting torches, hand tools, drills, punches, a tape measure, etc.. This role must maintain a safe and clean work environment by complying with procedures rules, and regulations.

WHAT YOU’LL DO:

  • This is a 100% field-based position
  • Read blueprints and generate welding work plans
  • Understand types of metals and work techniques
  • Maintain extensive knowledge of joiner and interiors of vessels (ability to learn)
  • Maintain general familiarization with vessel systems
  • Manage welding labor force task completion
  • Communicate with Shipyard Superintendent and Project Managers on work plans and sequencing
  • Generate welding work plans and manage timely completion of team assignments
  • Quality control welding projects
  • Train Personnel on welding techniques
  • Assist with the development of training content for welder programs; participate in training employees
  • Coach welding team on proper welding and fitting techniques
  • Participate in the interview process and performance evaluations as necessary
  • Maintain current knowledge of applicable regulations and support company compliance with ABS/USCG standards

WHO YOU ARE:

Certifications and Other Requirements

  • 5 years welding stick, inner shield
  • 3 years welding aluminum
  • 3 years fitting pipe in a field environment
  • 2 years fitting structural repairs in a maritime environment
  • Certified Welder
  • Ability to pass ABS Welding test 1-6GR
  • Shipyard Competent Person
  • OSHA 10-Hour Maritime
  • Qualified Forklift Operator
  • Qualified Rigger
  • Merchant Mainer Credential & TWIC Card
  • Participation in DOT Random Drug Testing Program

Mental Aptitudes

  • Attention to detail/excellent organizational skills.
  • Ability to handle stressful situations with focus.
  • Desire to learn, comprehend, and progress, willingness to start from the bottom.
  • Understanding importance and taking pride and responsibility in mastering the small things, before mastering the big ones.
  • Understand and respect the chain of command. Ability to take direction no matter how it is given.
  • Continuously demonstrate a strong sense of responsibility and ownership by being proactive in all situations /tasks.
  • Welder III employees must demonstrate effective leadership skills.
  • Ability to measure and cut material.
  • Ability to read and comprehend a tape measure.
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Physical Aptitudes

  • Must be able to at least 40 lbs. without restriction. Position involves lifting, pulling, and operating heavy equipment and objects.
  • Agility to bend, stoop, or squat, and climb high steps/ladders frequently.
  • Physical dexterity and strength to operate deck machinery; work on equipment that is poorly accessible or in confined workspaces.
  • Must be able to keep balance/ equilibrium while performing duties at various heights and moving platforms.
  • Ability to work in confined spaces for prolonged periods of time.
  • Adequate hearing & vision ability.
  • Proper heat/cold tolerance, working in all weather conditions.
  • Comfortable working while exposed to grease, dirt, paint, water, etc.
  • Must be able to swim
