Job Summary/Controls

Under the general supervision of both the Chief of Police and Security, and under the technical supervision of the Radio Communication Center Supervisor, the Communications Officer receives complaints and messages and dispatches responses as necessary. No supervisory responsibilities.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities 

  • Answers all telephone calls, including but not limited to, complaints and warrant checks; logs each according to established procedures.
  • Generates and maintains a complaint control card for each complaint received. Files reports and cards as required. Makes warrant checks and obtains information from the Bureau of Motor Vehicles (BMV).
  • Dispatches calls to police officers in the field for appropriate responses. Serves as dispatcher (non-certified) and Communications Officer (certified).
  • Operates computer and other communications-related equipment.
  • Monitors R.C.C. Alarm printer. Activates EMACS for emergency maintenance calls.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.

Qualifications

Education and/or Experience

  • High School Diploma or equivalent required.
  • Ability to speak in a clear, concise manner, communicates effectively, and interact well with the public and staff.
  • Ability to work any shift, and when called in for emergencies.
  • Knowledge of and ability to operate computers.
  • Ability to type at least 35 wpm.
  • Ability to record radio and telephone messages accurately.
  • Ability to learn and obtain certification from Cuyahoga Regional Information System, (CRIS) and Law Enforcement Automated Data Systems (LEADS).
  • Passage of a drug-screening test.
  • Passage of physical and psychological examinations.
  • Possession of a personal home telephone.
  • Ability to obtain certification by the State of Ohio.

  • Must have a valid Ohio Driver’s License with no more than three points, and be insurable under Agency guidelines.
