Role and Responsibilities:

The Direct Support Professional (Employee Specialist) for persons with disabilities and/or disabling conditions plays a crucial role in providing direct care and support to individuals with various disabilities. The Direct Support Professional will be responsible for assisting program participants in traveling to appointments, recreational activities, or community outings. As well as, but not limited to, providing emotional support companionship, and offering encouragement in coping with challenges associated with disabilities.

  • Engage and orient clients to the program community.
  • Facilitate self-help and other groups as needed.
  • Provide support for those program clients who may need assistance with advocating for themselves.
  • Keep appropriate detailed and accurate documentation.
  • Assist clients, individually or in groups, to develop and maintain independent living skills (budgeting, shopping, cooking, social skills, etc.).
  • Encourage and support recreational activities, employment; Use agency vehicle to transport clients as needed.
  • Develop and facilitate various self-help groups or run dual recovery support groups.
  • Serve as a mentor to those individuals who may need additional emotional support or encouragement to attend school or work.
  • Connect individuals with community resources i.e. food bank, meetings, etc.
  • Assist when needed with house meetings if applicable.
  • Utilize safe and appropriate handling, management and guidance procedures when working with program participants.
  • Attend staff meeting as assigned
  • Attend Interim and program training as assigned.
  • Clean and straighten program facilities.
  • Work as a member of a support team.
  • Other duties as assigned
