Scope of Position:
The Manager of Technical Services facilitates discovery and use of the Mayer Library's research collection by ensuring the accuracy of library system data and accessibility of the library's materials. The Manager of Technical Services provides cataloging guidance and expertise for the department, manages all aspects of cataloging operations, including materials processing and preservation, and assists with library system administration.
Essential Functions:
  • Manage and perform quality control on the library catalog database to ensure accuracy, consistency, and standardization regarding, but not limited to, content description, subject analysis, access points, classification numbers, local MFHD and item information.
  • Catalog and classify library materials in accordance with current accepted standards and local practices, including original and complex cataloging of a variety of formats in one or more languages, requiring interpretation, judgment, and subject-matter expertise.
  • Work with Director of Library & Archives in library system administration and developing technical services priorities, including short and long-term planning.
  • Establish and maintain documentation of technical services policies, procedures, and workflows.
  • Support the care and long-term use of library materials by identifying items with preservation or special housing needs and coordinate appropriate actions as needed; perform minor repairs on damaged materials.
  • Perform and supervise materials end-processing.
  • Prepare administrative and statistical reports.
  • Manage library supply needs, prepare orders, and monitor supplies budget allocation.
  • Contribute to collection management and access efforts for library resources including inventory control, metadata control and remediation, and expanding the digital reach of library collections.
  • Supervise the work of technical services staff and interns; provide training to library staff on technical services procedures, cataloging standards, systems, and tools.
  • Maintain current knowledge of professional cataloging procedures and standards.
  • Maintain current knowledge of new developments in describing specialized materials including art history resources.
  • Advise Director of Library & Archives on tools and resources that facilitate efficiency and quality of technical services activities.
  • Perform related duties and projects as assigned.

Requirements
Required Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Master of Library or Information Science degree from an ALA-accredited program.
  • Minimum of five years progressively responsible experience working in technical services including original cataloging duties and direct supervision of paid or volunteer staff.
  • Five years or more experience with original cataloging of complex or specialized materials about art, art history, and related subjects.
  • Professional knowledge of AACR2, MARC, RDA and other authority sources.
  • Experience in collection management including inventory control, metadata quality control, authority control, and creating reports.
  • Strong computer skills and proficiency with commonly used Microsoft Office applications.
  • Aptitude and interest in learning new technologies; ability to problem solve and learn new systems or procedures for productive results.
  • Excellent organizational, time management, and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Ability to collaborate and coordinate as a member of a team.
  • Detail-oriented, with excellent proof-reading skills and spelling accuracy.
  • Ability to represent the museum in a professional and courteous manner.
  • Ability to sit or stand for long periods of time, climb step stool, reach for materials on high and low shelves, push a book truck, lift heavy boxes.
Preferred Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Experience cataloging special collections
  • Experience with cloud-based library services platforms
  • Experience with Ex Libris Voyager, OCLC Connexion/Record Manager, MarcEdit, SharePoint
  • Library system migration and implementation experience
  • Practical experience with metadata and content standards used in the creation and organization of digital content
  • Reading knowledge of at least one Romance language and familiarity with languages other than English
