Basic Qualifications
J.D. plus a minimum of three years of full-time post-law school law-related public interest practice (in a nonprofit, government agency, private public interest firm, or the international equivalent).
Additional Qualifications and Skills
We are looking for people who have:
  • Demonstrated experience in career counseling, advising and/or mentoring.
  • Demonstrated experience in event planning and project management.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal (specifically, presenting in front of others and group facilitation).
  • Flexible work style suited for small, team-oriented, highly productive, entrepreneurial office.
  • Outstanding interpersonal skills.

Position Description
As an Assistant Director for Public Interest J.D. Advising, you will:
  • Counsel a large volume of JD students (1L, 2L, and 3L), about all facets of a public sector career choice/job search, including advice on determining "fit," the diverse range of practice options, and the career decision-making process. Keep current on public interest hiring trends. Assist in advising LLM students as necessary.
  • Plan, develop, and manage mentorship programs linking students with each other and with alumni, including a public service leaders program and a federal government mentorship program.
  • Assist in the execution of career programs and workshops.
  • Attend all office key functions.
  • Manage larger-scale projects under the office's purview/related to the office's mission.
  • Conceive of/develop and write varied materials for office publications and website.
  • Review and edit student resumes, cover letters, and other application materials.
  • Conduct outreach to public interest employers.
  • Performs other duties as necessary.

Job Summary
The Bernard Koteen Office of Public Interest Advising (OPIA) is an independent career services office for Harvard Law School students and alumni interested in public service work. OPIA is a collaborative, mission-driven office. Reporting to the Assistant Dean for Public Service, the Assistant Director for JD Advising will be responsible for advising a high volume of JD students interested in public service summer or postgraduate work.
