Senior Accountant

POSITION SUMMARY:
The Senior Accountant assists in financial closing activities, including preparation of journal entries, account reconciliations, reporting and account analysis. This position will assist in preparing and reporting of the annual budget for the Province and assigned subsidiary entities (Sponsored Works). The Senior Accountant will maintain accounting principles, practices, procedures, and internal controls to enable the preparation of accurate and timely financial statements in accordance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). This position reports to the Accounting Manager.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

1. Assists in preparation and reporting of the annual budget for the Province.
2. Support budgeting and planning activities for assigned Sponsored Works.
3. Prepare financial statement analyses and other financial information to assist with quarterly management and Board of Directors reports for the Province and assigned Sponsored Work(s).
4. Coordinate capital spending activity with the Provincial Director of Facilities and Accounts Payable Processor to maintain the fixed asset sub-ledger system and reconcile it to the general ledger on a monthly basis.
5. Prepare journal entries, financial account analysis and assigned reconciliations for the Province.
6. Coordinate, review and follow-up with managers on actual vs. budget variance explanations.
7. Collaborate with members of the Finance team to ensure a clean and timely year end audits (for the Province and assigned Sponsored Works).
8. Lead assigned Finance/Accounting process and serve as backup for completing the daily accounting transactions for the assigned process.
9. Support Finance Management with special projects, financial analysis, process improvements and other responsibilities as assigned.
10. Work with direct report to establish goals and objectives each year and monitor and advise on the progress to enhance their professional development.

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
The position requires a Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance. The ideal candidate will have four or more years prior experience in the financial accounting and reporting/general ledger area. Experience working in a not-for-profit is a plus.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES:
The position requires knowledge of financial accounting and reporting and a thorough understanding of Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP). Strong interpersonal and customer service skills required. All candidates must be PC proficient with strong experience in Microsoft Excel. Experience with Blackbaud's Financial Edge accounting system is a plus.
