Dayton Society of Natural History is Hiring a Museum Educator - Part Time Near Dayton, OH

Job Title: Museum Educator – PT
Reports To: Manager of Education and Public Programs
FLSA Status: Non-Exempt, Hourly – $14/hr
Work Hours: Average of 24 hours per week
Work Schedule: Rotating schedule including weekends

DUTIES:

  • Deliver STEM-to-You outreach programs to schools located locally and throughout Ohio. Overnight travel may be required, up to 5 days and 4 nights. The Museum will cover travel and accommodations, and the candidate will need a valid State of Ohio driver’s license.
  • Deliver public programs for walk-in visitation during the weekend. This includes assisting with program/script development, training volunteers, materials acquisition, program delivery, tracking visitation and clean-up/recovery.
  • Deliver a variety of STEM based programs for children age pre-k through 12 at the Museum and through distance learning according to supervisor specifications. This includes but is not limited to materials acquisition, program delivery, tracking visitation and clean-up/recovery.
  • Complete animal handling training to work with a variety of live animals including but not limited to reptiles, amphibians, birds, and mammals.
  • Complete laboratory safety training to work with various chemicals and laboratory equipment.
  • Demonstrate and maintain safe practices.
  • Communicate with students of all ages, volunteers, visiting teachers, and staff.
  • Periodically walk through gallery and straighten as needed. Assist in upkeep of laboratory.
  • Maintain safe, attractive, and efficient office, classroom, and gallery spaces.
  • Communicate with children, parents and staff members effectively, truthfully and respectfully
  • Assist with the preparation of developmentally appropriate materials, presentations and activities which reflect the needs and interest of children and adults participating in programs presented by the Boonshoft Museum of Discovery.
  • Adhere to all DSNH Education, Live Animals and Collections Department protocol, policies and best practices to ensure high-quality, content-approved programs and presentations.
  • Participate in evaluations and professional development to improve self and Museum programs.
  • Assist in curriculum development and lesson planning for Museum summer camps.
  • Teach summer camp classes as assigned by supervisor.
  • Other duties as assigned.
