DC Department of Human Resources is Hiring an Accident Investigator Near Washington, DC

This position is located in the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD), Investigative Services Bureau (ISD), Criminal Investigations Division (CID). The position is responsible for investigating traffic accidents.
This Accident Investigator position is covered under the National Association of Government Employees (NAGE) bargaining unit and you may be required to pay an agency fee through direct payroll deductions.
The Incumbent Will Be Responsible For The Following
  • Reviews and reconciles hit & run traffic crash reports.
  • Investigates and conducts interviews with complainants and witnesses via telephone, email, and in person, which includes the District of Columbia, Maryland or Virginia.
  • Communicates with insurance agents, car rental representatives, FedEx personnel, Metro Transit authorities and other local, state, and federal government law enforcement agencies.
  • Investigates the accident scene and canvasses the scene for witnesses, evidence, traffic signals, stop signs, etc.
  • Reviews cameras, e.g., CCTV, LPR, private, personal or Security cameras belonging to apartment buildings or local businesses in the area, and federal cameras, to identify vehicle tags and other possible evidence in relation to the hit & run accident.
  • Prepares case jackets and Hit and Run worksheets according to OAG’s procedures.
  • Conducts WALES, NCIC and Justice searches on all suspects and complaints for possible criminal background history; identifies the true owners of the vehicles and other vehicles involved for valid registrations and insurance.
  • Gathers and documents all facts & findings from the Hit and Run investigation.
  • Prepares and submits monthly Hit and Run reports to the CID.
  • Prepares and mails or emails disposition letters to the complainants or defendants and witnesses (if the case has been suspended, closed or unfounded).
  • Provides courteous, effective, and professional service at all times.
  • Presents Arrest Affidavits to the Office of the Attorney General.
  • Attends court proceedings if a Court Appearance Notification is received from the Office of Attorney General or Assistant US Attorney.
  • Occasionally, attends OAG training.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Licensures, Certifications And Other RequirementsThe incumbent is required to possess and maintain a valid driver’s license.
EducationHigh School Diploma is required. A Bachelor’s Degree is preferred.
Work ExperienceApplicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the CS-09 grade level, or its non-District equivalent, gained from the public or private sector. Specialized experience includes understanding the Department's organizational structure, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations; ability to apply investigative practices and technique and traffic laws of the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia; and the DC Code; understanding MPD's General Orders in relation to traffic violations and arrest; communicating orally and operating Microsoft Suite applications and other office software; handling high level stress while investigating Hit & Run traffic cases which includes prioritizing tasks, time/case management; and the ability to interview, follow leads, research records, interpret results, evaluate data, analyze and make recommendations and decisions, and prepare comprehensive reports in a clear, concise, logical and objective manner and present the results in both written and oral formats.
  • Knowledge of the Department’s organizational structure, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations.
  • Thorough knowledge of investigative practices and techniques.
  • Knowledge of MPD’s General Orders in relations to traffic violations and arrests.
  • Knowledge of traffic laws of the District of Columbia, Maryland and Virginia; and the DC Code.
  • Knowledge of criminal procedures for arrest warrants, judicial summons, and other traffic related criminal laws, to include Driving under the Influence (DUI) and Driving While Intoxicated (DWI).
  • Demonstrated ability to communicate orally and verbally.
  • Knowledge and ability to conduct traffic crash investigations.
  • Ability to work independently in carrying out the Department’s mission and objectives.
  • Knowledge and ability to use Microsoft Suite applications and other office software as needed.
  • Ability to interview, follow leads, research records, interpret results, evaluate data, analyze and make recommendations and decisions, and prepare comprehensive reports in a clear, concise, logical and objective manner and present the results in both written and oral formats.
  • Ability to handle high level stress while investigating Hit and Run traffic cases which includes prioritizing tasks, time/case management.
  • Skill to interpret and apply rules, regulations, policies and procedures.
Work EnvironmentThe work environment involves everyday risks or discomforts that require normal safety precautions typical of such places as offices, meeting rooms, private homes, businesses and on the scene and in the field.

The position may be considered an Essential or Emergency position. This position is part of a 24-7 operation and is subject to non-traditional work hours, including rotating shifts, shift work and working weekends and holidays. The incumbent may be asked to work a variety of schedules in order to conduct investigative activities.
