DC Department of Human Resources is Hiring a Supervisory Community Safety Ambassador Near Washington, DC

This position is located in the Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) and operates under the Patrol Services South (PSS) Bureau and the Patrol Services North (PSN) Bureau. The position is responsible for supervising the Community Safety Ambassadors (CSAs) that responds to non-priority calls for service. Community Safety Ambassadors provide support to the department’s sworn members in non-emergency, non-priority situations; engage in community outreach with the public; and offer a visible, community-based police support function to enhance MPD’s service to the public. CSAs are non-sworn members of MPD who are authorized to assist sworn members in the performance of certain duties that do not require authority to make arrests; they are essential components of the department’s efforts to provide quality service to the residents and visitors of the District of Columbia.
The CSA Supervisor position has a primary responsibility for supervising the performance of Community Safety Ambassadors under his/her command as assigned by the CSA Program manager. CSA Supervisors are expected to be in the field monitoring, responding, and supervising CSAs.
The Incumbent Will Be Responsible For The Following
  • Works under the direction of the CSA Program Manager; is responsible for first line direct supervision of CSAs within program policies, regulations, established procedures and standards, and training protocols.
  • Manages and supervises the activities of assigned CSAs to include, but not limited to: engaging with the community through high visibility and community meetings and events and supports safe passage efforts; assisting with low-risk scene security; assisting with administrative tasks and maintaining records and preparing reports; and assisting with Telephone Reporting Unit operations.
  • Plans, coordinates, and evaluates operations and goals of CSAs. Inspects, reviews, and monitors work and documents of assigned CSAs.
  • Inspects vehicles, equipment, and supplies as part of basic equipment maintenance.
  • Researches, reviews, and interprets policies, rules, procedures, and laws as appropriate.
  • Commends, applies corrective action, and completes performance evaluations on assigned CSAs.
  • Maintains public relations with the community.
  • Completes reports and necessary documentation.
  • Conducts training and identifies training needs of personnel.
  • Performs supervisory functions involving personnel utilization and counseling/mentoring.
  • Directs and coordinates activities of an assignment.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
Licensures, Certifications And Other RequirementsMust possess and maintain a valid driver's license.
EducationHigh School Diploma or its equivalent is required. Bachelor's degree preferred.
Work ExperienceApplicants must have at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the CS-11 grade level, or its non-District equivalent, gained from the public or private sector. Specialized experience includes understanding the Department's organizational structure, policies, procedures, rules, and regulations; ability to learn MPD's General Orders in relation to CSA areas of responsibility; communicating orally and operating Microsoft Suite applications and other office software; handling high level stress while responding to calls which includes prioritizing tasks, time/case management; and the ability to analyze and make recommendations and decisions, and prepare comprehensive reports in a clear, concise, logical and objective manner and present the results in both written and oral formats; ability to supervise non-sworn personnel.
One year of prior team lead or supervisory experience required.
Work EnvironmentThe work environment requires frequent public contact, decision-making, and concentration as well as possible contact with hostile individuals. Supervisory Community Safety Ambassadors must have the ability to behave respectably and with the utmost integrity even when off duty. May be required to respond for any critical incident, manmade or natural; some assignments may require working weekends, nights, and/or occasional overtime. The work environment involves exposure to varied weather conditions.
Other Significant FactorsManagement Supervisory Service (MSS) Term Appointment, Not-to-Exceed (NTE) 13-months, renewable up to four years.

This Position Is Deemed As ”Safety Sensitive” Pursuant To Chapter 4 Of The D.C. Personnel Regulations, In Addition To The General Suitability Screening And Criminal Background Check (pre-employment And Periodic), Individuals May Be Subject To The Following Checks And Tests
  • Traffic record check (as applicable);
  • Pre-employment drug and alcohol test (as applicable);
  • Consumer credit check (as applicable);
  • Reasonable suspicion drug and alcohol test;
  • Random drug and alcohol test;
  • Return to duty or follow-up drug and alcohol test; and
  • Post-accident or incident drug and alcohol test.
This position operates within the confines of a 24/7 operation. Your position is “essential” and subject to rotating shifts, to include weekends and holidays.
A background investigation, to include a criminal, traffic and credit check are required for positions with the Metropolitan Police Department.
The incumbent is required to possess and maintain a valid motor vehicle operator’s permit.
This position is “At Will”. At will employment applies to the Management Supervisory Service (MSS). All positions and appointments in the MSS serve at the pleasure of the appointing authority and may be terminated at any time with or without cause. This position is not in a collective bargaining unit.
